Summer Community Service Opportunity
Warm Greetings.  I have personally been in touch with some of you, but wanted to share that SummerAde will be starting its 7th season of matching high school age volunteers with special needs children to mentor them during a week or more of summer day camp in Marin.   Last summer, we arranged over 50 weeks of mentor/camper matches at various camps throughout Marin County with mentors representing nearly every high school in Marin.    We are now actively recruiting for this coming summer and hope you will refer interested students to our new, user friendly website for more information and to

The City of San Rafael works very closely with the City of Novato to operate the Hamilton Community Pool. This year I wanted to work directly with the Novato High Schools to actively recruit employees who live, love, and would like to work in Novato at Hamilton. We are recruiting for our 2015 summer staff, which includes pool attendants, lifeguards, swim instructors, and camp counselors - with an aquatic focus.

My organization, Shining Star Productions Incorporated (SSPI) is a local Novato production company that specializes in children's programs.  We are producing two summer camps this summer and are in need of student volunteers!

SSPI needs approximately 4 or 5 production assistants for this camp. Duties include video-taping & photographing the camp in action, being a runner & getting any on the spot needed items (so a licensed driver is good here - they can use my vehicle if needed), manning the first aid station, coordinating dropped-off pot luck food items, watching the kids at lunch break & watching the kids during the intermissions of the shows. * If I can locate a volunteer (or a few) who has video editing skills they will have an opportunity to create a short video of the camp and will receive producer credit on that video.

Camp dates: Monday, July 13th thru Friday, July 17th, 8:30am to 5:15pm, except Show Day, Friday the 17th, we stay late till 10: pm!

Volunteers need to bring their packed lunches each day. A dinner will be provided to them on Show Day!

Location: Sinaloa Middle School, Novato

There will also be a volunteer meeting for this camp but the date & time is TBA later. For more information contact Kisstrin Cozier, Executive Director Shining Star Productions Incorporated

Tutor:

I tutor students from elementary school to college in Mathematics. I work well with both gifted students, whose education I can accelerate past their grade level, as well those students to whom mathematics does not come naturally; tailoring my approach to their individual needs. Aside from my own deep interest and expertise in mathematics I am fully versed in current common core standards and can help children meet the standards set by it.

While attending UC Santa Cruz I also tutored students in advanced subjects such as complex analysis and topology and I've shepherded many students at the local College of Marin through their various math courses. You can reach me at either willpowelson@gmail.com or at 415.433.2211

Consumer Tip-Be Skeptical of Aid Guarantees

You receive a notice in the mail that "guarantees" financial aid for your graduating high school student. In exchange for an advance fee, scholarships, grants and fantastic financial aid packages are yours for the taking. Is this perfect timing?

With tuition bills skyrocketing and room-and-board costs going through the roof, students and their families are looking for creative ways to fund a college education. While there are companies that provide lists of scholarships for an advance fee, no legitimate company will guarantee or promise scholarships or grants.

Be wary of companies that offer a money-back guarantee but attach conditions that make it impossible to get a refund. Often "success stories" may be nothing more than paid testimonials. Steer clear of high-pressure salespersons who say you can't get their information anywhere else or that you must act and pay immediately or risk losing the "opportunity."

Check with you high school counseling office for a list of scholarships, grants and aid that match the student's profile and qualifications. College or career school financial aid offices may also be a good source of information, including websites to assist you in your financial aid search.

More information is available through the Marin County district attorney's consumer protection unit at 473-6495 or through its website at www.co.marin.ca.us/da
