Consumer Tip-Be Skeptical of Aid Guarantees

You receive a notice in the mail that "guarantees" financial aid for your graduating high school student. In exchange for an advance fee, scholarships, grants and fantastic financial aid packages are yours for the taking. Is this perfect timing?

With tuition bills skyrocketing and room-and-board costs going through the roof, students and their families are looking for creative ways to fund a college education. While there are companies that provide lists of scholarships for an advance fee, no legitimate company will guarantee or promise scholarships or grants.

Be wary of companies that offer a money-back guarantee but attach conditions that make it impossible to get a refund. Often "success stories" may be nothing more than paid testimonials. Steer clear of high-pressure salespersons who say you can't get their information anywhere else or that you must act and pay immediately or risk losing the "opportunity."

Check with you high school counseling office for a list of scholarships, grants and aid that match the student's profile and qualifications. College or career school financial aid offices may also be a good source of information, including websites to assist you in your financial aid search.
