The purpose of the Lawrence postdoctoral fellowships at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is to pursue cutting-edge science and stimulate cross-fertilization of ideas. Fellowships are awarded to candidates with exceptional talent, scientific track records, and potential for significant achievements. Typically two to four fellowships are awarded each year. Applicants must either be in the process of completing their PhD (within one year and employment may not start until PhD requirements have been verified), or have received their PhD degree within five years of being hired as a Lawrence Fellow.

Promoting Innovative Approaches to Peacebuilding

Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs are joining efforts to promote innovative approaches in the broad and evolving field of peacebuilding. This joint Public-Private Partnership on Peacebuilding (Px4 Initiative) will provide funding for one to three consortia that will present projects involving a US, a Norwegian, and at least one Southern/emerging power partner. Grants can be up to USD 1 million. There should be substantial involvement by all three consortia partners, with special emphasis on the Southern/emerging power partner. One institute should coordinate the consortium submission, including taking responsibility for financial management and reporting. More details on the website.

 Members of the Academic Senate in all fields are eligible to apply for individual grants. Individuals who are not members of the Academic Senate but are established investigators may seek support through joint applications with members of the Senate, or the recommendation from the Department Chair for an exception supporting the applicant's request and advising the Subcommittee of his/her status in the department. Priority is generally given to junior and new faculty with no extramural support, and Academic Senate members will be given priority over non-Senate members. Project descriptions should be written in general terms and comprehensible to non-specialists. Priority will be given to original projects, especially by junior and recently arrived faculty with no extramural or intramural support (including start-up funds). Research grants generally do not exceed $20,000.

The Lionel Gelber Prize was founded in 1989 by Canadian diplomat Lionel Gelber. The Gelber Prize is a literary award for the world's best non-fiction book in English that seeks to deepen public debate on significant global issues. There is a $50 entry fee. The Bancroft Prizes are awarded annually by Columbia University to the authors of distinguished works in either or both of the following categories: American History (including biography) and Diplomacy. The competition is open to all persons whether connected with Columbia University or not and whether citizens of the United States or any other country. The word "American" is interpreted to include all the Americas, North, Central, and South; however, the award is confined to works originally written in English or of which there is a published translation in English. The Congressional Internship Program exposes young Latinos to the legislative process and strengthens their professional and leadership skills, ultimately promoting the presence of Latinos on Capitol Hill and in federal agencies. The program provides college students with a paid work placement in a Congressional office or federal agency for a period of twelve weeks (Spring/Fall) or eight weeks (summer). Promising Latino undergraduates from across the country are selected for this leadership training program. Students gain work experience, participate in a community service project, and receive educational and professional programming provided by the institute This comprehensive three-prong approach provides extraordinary learning and networking opportunities for students.

Annual grant competition to support PhD dissertation research on American foreign policy, international relations, international security, strategic studies, area studies, and diplomatic and military history. The fellowship's objective is to support the research and writing of policy-relevant dissertations through funding of fieldwork, archival research, and language training. In evaluating applications, the Foundation will accord preference to those projects that could directly inform US policy debates and thinking, rather than dissertations that are principally focused on abstract theory or debates within a scholarly discipline.

Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University during the fellowship year. Fellows are expected to be free of their regular commitments so they may devote themselves full time to the work outlined in their proposal. Since this is a residential fellowship, we expect fellows to reside in the Boston area during that period and to have their primary office at the Institute so that they can participate fully in the life of the community. Stipends are funded up to $70,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists

DAAD offers grants for one to three months in all academic disciplines to scholars at US and Canadian institutions of higher education to pursue research at universities, libraries, archives, institutes or laboratories in Germany. The aim of this particular program is to support short-term research stays and thus promote the exchange of experience and networking among colleagues. Grants are awarded for research projects and cannot be used for travel only.

National Humanities Center Fellowships

The National Humanities Center offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities during the academic year. Applicants must hold doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Young scholars as well as senior scholars are encouraged to apply, but they must have a record of publication, and new PhDs should be aware that the Center does not support the revision of a doctoral dissertation. In addition to scholars from all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. The Center is also international and gladly accepts applications from scholars outside the United States.

The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) Program helps early-stage doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences formulate innovative dissertation research proposals through workshops, exploratory summer research, and writing guided by peer review and faculty mentorship. The program seeks young scholars who are interested in strengthening their dissertation research plans through exposure to the theories, literatures, methods, and intellectual traditions of disciplines outside their own. By the end of the fellowship, participating students will complete a draft dissertation research proposal that can be reviewed with academic advisors.

Research Assistantships at the Kennan Institute

The Kennan Institute, in conjunction with the Woodrow Wilson Center, bridges the gap between the world of ideas and the world of public affairs by bringing scholars and governmental specialists together to discuss political, social, and economic issues affecting Russia and other successor states to the Soviet Union, seeking always to place these issues within their historical context. The institute offers paid research assistant positions for undergraduate, graduate, and prospective graduate students who are US citizens. Each research assistant works with a scholar in residence at the Institute over a period of three to nine months. Applicants should have a good command of the Russian language and ability to conduct independent research. This position offers a flexible schedule of 15 hours per week and a metro subsidy for conducting off-site research.

Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership Grant Program

CGP supports part of the expenses of a wide range of policy-oriented projects jointly conducted by Japanese institutions including non-profit organizations, universities, and think tanks, with US counterparts. These projects explore contemporary issues of global concern or issues common to the United States and Japan through dialogue and joint research. This program supports non-profit organizations in either the United States or Japan. Projects should fulfill at least one of the following goals: 1) to strengthen US-Japan networks; 2) to explore solutions to global and/or bilateral issues through dialogue; 3) to foster understanding of Japan in the United States. Concept paper is due Oct. 15; full proposal by invitation only.

This program aims to encourage timely completion of the PhD. Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure or shortly thereafter.

Max Weber Fellowship

The program is open to applicants who are within 5 years of the completion of their PhD from anywhere in the world, regardless of nationality, and is not restricted to citizens of the EU. The language of the program is English and applicants must fulfill the English language requirements set out in the eligibility requirements. The vast majority of Max Weber Fellowships are for one year. Most applicants in the field of economics are selected for a 2-year fellowship, which involves additional activities, such as limited teaching in the department, in the second year. Applicants in other disciplines may apply for a limited number of second-year Fellowships during the course of their first year.

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM and STEM education. NSF especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, and veterans to apply. NSF also encourages undergraduate seniors to apply.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science manages and administers Science & Technology Policy Fellowships in six program areas to provide the opportunity for accomplished scientists and engineers to participate in and contribute to the federal policymaking process while learning firsthand about the intersection of science and policy. The fellowships in congressional offices are funded by approximately 30 partner scientific and engineering societies. The fellowships in executive branch agencies are funded by the hosting offices. The School of Historical Studies supports scholarship in all fields of historical research, but is concerned principally with the history of western, near eastern and Asian civilizations, with particular emphasis upon Greek and Roman civilization, the history of Europe (medieval, early modern, and modern), the Islamic world, East Asian studies, art history, the history of science and philosophy, and modern international relations. Each year scholars from around the world apply to visit the institute to pursue their own research. Those who are chosen are offered a membership for a set period. Members receive access to the extensive resources of the Institute, including offices, access to libraries, subsidized restaurant and housing facilities, and some secretarial services. Members must be in residence during their term.

Minority Dissertation Fellowship Program in Education Research

The fellowship program was established to provide support for doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding minority graduate students, and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties. This fellowship is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders). The program offers doctoral fellowships to enhance the competitiveness of outstanding minority scholars for academic appointments at major research universities. It supports fellows conducting education research and provides mentoring and guidance toward the completion of their doctoral studies.

International Dissertation Research Fellowship

The Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled in PhD programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research on non-US topics. Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $20,000. The fellowship includes participation in an SSRC-funded interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research.
Applicants from select disciplines within the humanities (Art History, Architectural History, Classics, Drama/Theater, Film Studies, Literature, Musicology, Performance Studies, Philosophy, Political Theory, and Religion) are welcome to request three or more months of funding for international onsite dissertation research (in combination with US-based research, for a total of nine to twelve months of funding). All other applicants must request nine to twelve months of onsite, site-specific dissertation research with a minimum of six months of research outside of the United States. Research within the United States must be site-specific (e.g., at a particular archive) and cannot be at the applicant's home institution unless that institution has necessary site-specific research holdings.
