China Eyes Innovation in Face of Economic "New Normal"

A document, co-published by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council, China's cabinet, on Monday underscored the role of innovation-driven development amid the economic "new normal" of slower growth. The document said that all psychological and institutional obstacles must be broken to accelerate innovation-driven development to ensure mass innovation is brought into full play.

China to Launch Chang'e-5 Around 2017

The second ground test of the power system of China's next-generation carrier rocket was completed Monday, ahead of its first flight in 2016. "The Chang'e-5 lunar mission is undergoing intensive development and is scheduled to be launched with a Long March-5 carrier rocket from south China's Hainan Province around 2017," said Xu Dazhe, head of the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National defense.

China's Natural Science Foundation Finances 39,000 Programs in 2014

China's National Natural Science Foundation (NSF) funded more than 39,000 programs in 2014 with a total investment of 25.1 billion yuan (about 4.09 billion U.S. dollars), they announced Tuesday. NSF president Yang Wei said at a meeting that in 2015, the foundation will focus its resources on basic research and frontiers of science to upgrade the nation's ability to innovate.
