AAAS Science News Writing Internship, Science magazine

Science magazine, founded in 1880 by Thomas Alva Edison, is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). These prestigious internships are available to University graduates or seniors who  have an interest (and preferably experience) writing about science and should be prepared to report, research, write and edit under weekly deadlines. The Science intern will join the regular news staff in Washington, DC, and devote most of his or her time to contributing to the magazine and to ScienceNOW, our daily online news service. In addition, the intern will research and write other news stories, assist in production, fill in for absent staffers, and provide help as needed to staff writers and editors. Science pays a modest salary.

Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars East European Studies Program Summer Research Scholarships for Graduate Students

EES offers summer research scholarships to scholars working on policy relevant projects on East Europe. While Southeast Europe remains a primary focus, projects on Central Europe and the Baltic states are again eligible. Projects should focus on fields in the social sciences and humanities including, but not limited to: Anthropology, History, Political Science, Slavic Languages and Literatures, and Sociology. All projects should aim to highlight their potential policy relevance. The grant is available to graduate students (MA or higher) and scholars who are U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Summer Research Scholars will be given access to a workspace and computer facilities in the Wilson Center library. Grants are for 2 months during the summer and include residency at the Wilson Center.

Research Assistantships at the Kennan Institute

The Kennan Institute offers paid research assistant positions for undergraduate, graduate, and prospective graduate students who are U.S. citizens. Each research assistant works with a scholar in residence at the Institute over a period of three to nine months. Applicants should have a good command of the Russian language and ability to conduct independent research. This position offers a flexible schedule of 15 hours per week and a metro subsidy for conducting off-site research.

The Kennan Institute, in conjunction with the Woodrow Wilson Center, bridges the gap between the world of ideas and the world of public affairs by bringing scholars and governmental specialists together to discuss political, social, and economic issues affecting Russia and other successor states to the Soviet Union, seeking always to place these issues within their historical context.

UC Humanities Network Faculty Research Fellowships in the Humanities

The fellowship supports research in the following areas: Language studies, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; those aspects of the social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to human, social, and cultural issues. Fellowships are awarded to UC ladder rank faculty working in any of the areas described above in a University-wide competition. Assistant Professors are especially encouraged to apply. Awards will be made to both tenured and untenured faculty. The award competition is managed by the UC Humanities Research Institute at UC Irvine.

American Institute of Indian Studies Junior Fellowships

Founded to assist scholars in their study of all aspects of Indian history, culture and contemporary life, the Institute brings about 40 scholars to India every year. These are both American citizens as well as non-American citizens resident in the United States. Junior Research Fellowships  are available to doctoral candidates at U.S. universities in all fields of study. Junior Research Fellowships are specifically designed to enable doctoral candidates to pursue their dissertation research in India. Junior Research Fellows establish formal affiliation with Indian universities and Indian research supervisors.  Awards are available for up to eleven months.

German Historical Institute Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships

The GHI awards short-term fellowships to German and American doctoral students as well as postdoctoral scholars in the fields of German history, the history of German-American relations, and the history of the role of Germany and the USA in international relations. These fellowships are also available to German doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars in the field of American history. We especially invite applications from doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars who currently do not receive funding from their home institutions. The research projects must draw upon primary sources located in the United States.

Harry S. Truman Library Institute Research Grants Program

Research grants of up to $2,500 are awarded twice annually to offset the cost of conducting research at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum. The spring round of grants (deadline in April) includes one John K. Hulston Scholarship of up to $2,500, to be awarded to a researcher who wishes to visit multiple research facilities, including the Truman Library, for their topic. Applicants should indicate their interest in the Hulston Scholarship when submitting their applications. Competitive proposals will evidence a clear understanding of the existing research in the field and how the proposed work adds significantly to that body of literature. Applicants are expected to demonstrate both an analytical and descriptive grasp of the project and its centrality to the Truman era.

Jefferson Memorial Foundation Short Term Fellowships

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation provides residential fellowships and travel grants for use at Monticello's International Center for Jefferson Studies. Short-Term Fellowships are awarded for periods one to four months. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the International Center for Jefferson Studies during the course of the fellowship, and no awards are made for work carried on elsewhere.

Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies

Galina Starovoitova Fellowship on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution

In keeping with both the legacies of Woodrow Wilson and Galina Starovoitova, the Starovoitova Fellowship will be available to prominent scholars and policy makers from the Russian Federation who have successfully bridged the worlds of ideas and public affairs to advance human rights, the rule of law, conflict resolution, the free press, and civil society. Applicants with outstanding capability and experience from a wide variety of backgrounds (including government, journalism, the professions, NGOs, and academia) are eligible for appointment. For academic participants, eligibility is limited to the postdoctoral level, and normally it is expected that academic candidates will have demonstrated their scholarly development by publication beyond the Kandidat dissertation. For other applicants, an equivalent level of professional achievement is expected. Applicants must be eligible to obtain a J-1 exchange visitor visa.

Endangered Language Fund Language Legacies Grant Program

The Endangered Language Fund provides grants for language maintenance and linguistic field work. The work most likely to be funded is that which serves both the native community and the field of linguistics. Work which has immediate applicability to one group and more distant application to the other will also be considered. Proposals can originate in any country. The language involved must be in danger of disappearing within a generation or two.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Congressional Internship Program

The purpose of the Congressional Internship Program (CIP) is to expose young Latinos to the legislative process and to strengthen their professional and leadership skills, ultimately promoting the presence of Latinos on Capitol Hill and in Federal Agencies. The program provides college students with a paid work placement in a Congressional Office or Federal Agency for a period of twelve weeks (Spring/Fall) or eight weeks (Summer). Promising Latino undergraduates from across the country are selected for this leadership training program. Students gain work experience, participate in a community service project, and receive educational and professional programming provided by CHCI.

Fellowships for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan

The Fellowship Program for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan is a joint activity of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Awards support research on modern Japanese society and political economy, Japan's international relations, and U.S.-Japan relations. Research should contribute to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of issues of concern to Japan and the United States. Appropriate disciplines for the research include anthropology, economics, geography, history, international relations, linguistics, political science, psychology, public administration, and sociology. Awards usually result in articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. Fellows may undertake their projects in Japan, the United States, or both, and may include work in other countries for comparative purposes. Projects may be at any stage of development.

Samual Eliot Morison Naval History Scholarship

The scholarship provides a $5,000 cash award to one active duty commissioned officer of the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps with demonstrated leadership potential and high academic qualifications who is already pursuing graduate study in history, international relations, or a related field. The award is to help pay for expenses related to research, travel, and the purchase of books or other educational materials.
