HYF Fellowships at a Glance

  • Fellowships consist of a nine-month stipend of $18,000 to defray living expenses. They are not intended to be used for UC student fees, tuition, or health insurance.
  • Doctoral students enrolled in the University of California, including J.D./Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., and M.D. with thesis, are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must advance to candidacy by June 30, 2015.
  • U.S. citizenship is not required.
  • Fellowships are for one year and may not be carried into future years.
  • Awardees are required, and their advisors are requested, to attend a symposium that will be held at LLNL during the 2015-16 academic year. Awardees may invite another member of their committee or interested faculty member if their advisor is unable to attend. Travel expenses will be covered by the labs. The symposium will be devoted to the awardee's research.
  • Five awardees will be eligible for an additional stipend to conduct research in Washington, D.C., for up to four weeks. Housing and travel expenses will be covered by IGCC.
  • Awardees may have the opportunity to present at a policy briefing in Washington, D.C. Travel expenses will be covered by IGCC.

Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship

This program provides college graduates the opportunity to work in Washington, DC, with a public-interest organization focusing on arms control and international security issues. Scoville Fellows may undertake a variety of activities, including research, writing, and organizing in support of the goals of their host organization and may attend coalition meetings, policy briefings, and Congressional hearings.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical Research Fellows Program

Deadline: January 12, 2015

 

The Medical Fellows Program supports a year of full-time biomedical research training for medical, dental, and veterinary students. This includes new joint initiatives with the Ivy Foundation for student researchers in the neurosciences, particularly neuro-oncology, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) for veterinary students.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Janelia Undergraduate Scholars

Our program gives undergraduates an opportunity to spend 10 weeks during the summer doing research as an intern in the lab of a mentor at Janelia Farm. The scholars are encouraged to attend weekly seminars and other events at Janelia. At the end of the session, each scholar will present their work at a symposium. We want to identify some of the very best future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians interested in our areas of research at an early career stage.

National Academies of Science Jefferson Science Fellows

Deadline: January 12, 2015

 

The Jefferson Science Fellowship is open to tenured, or similarly ranked, faculty from U.S. institutions of higher learning who are U.S. citizens. Selected Jefferson Science Fellows spend one year on assignment at the U.S. Department of State or USAID as science advisors on foreign policy issues. Assignments are tailored to the needs of the hosting office, while taking into account the Fellows' interests and areas of expertise. As part of their assignments, Jefferson Fellows also have the opportunity to travel to U.S. embassies and missions overseas. At the conclusion of the fellowship year, and upon return to their home institution, Fellows continue to serve as a resource to the State Department and USAID for an additional five years.

Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society Fellowships

Fellowship opportunities are awarded from an endowment in the Omicron Nu Fellowship Fund. Awards will be made for study and research in family and consumer sciences or one of its specializations at colleges or universities with strong research programs and supporting disciplines for the chosen major or topic. U.S. Army Dissertation Fellowship in Military History

Deadline: January 15, 2015

 

To encourage and support the production of dissertations in military history by qualified graduate students, the Center of Military History offers up to two dissertation fellowships each academic year. These fellowships carry a $10,000 stipend and access to the Center's facilities and technical expertise. Although the history of war on land is broadly defined in the fellowship program, the selection of winners gives preference to topics on the history of the U.S. Army.

Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs Fellowships

The Belfer Center offers research fellowships during the academic year to individuals who wish to devote their time to research and writing in the fields of science and international affairs. Fellows are selected by the Center's major research programs and are expected to work collaboratively with other Center researchers, as well as on their own projects. Broad research initiatives include the International Security Program (ISP); the Program on Intrastate Conflict and Conflict Resolution (ICP); the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program (STPP); the Dubai Initiative; and Religion in International Affairs.

The Political Science Program supports scientific research that advances knowledge and understanding of citizenship, government, and politics. Weatherhead Center for International Affairs Program on U.S.-Japan Relations Postdoctoral Fellows Program

The program offers postdoctoral fellowships for social scientists in a broad range of fields, including anthropology, economics, education, history, law, political science, public health, public policy, and sociology. Projects that focus on Japan or Japan's international role from a comparative, historical, or global perspective are welcome.

Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law
Hewlett Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Center welcomes applications from pre-doctoral students at the write-up stage and from post-doctoral scholars working in any of the four program areas of democracy, development, evaluating the efficacy of democracy promotion, and rule of law. Applicants working at the intersection of two or more of these issue areas will receive preferential consideration. Fellows spend the academic year at Stanford University completing their projects, participating in seminars, and interacting with each other and the resident faculty and research staff.

Dickey Center for International Understanding
Post-doctoral Fellows Program in U.S. Foreign Policy and International Security

The Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College encompasses the Institute for Arctic Studies, an interdisciplinary center for the study of the environment, climate change and policy implications, War and Peace Studies, the Global Heath Initiative and new research foci in human development and gender. Researchers with projects that intersect any of these areas are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants from all disciplines working on research that bears directly on U.S. foreign policy and international security are welcome to apply. While scholars at all stages of their careers will be considered, applications from recent recipients of the Ph.D or equivalent degree are especially welcomed. Fellows must be in residence during their fellowship and participate in Dickey Center seminars and events and are invited to take advantage of other Dartmouth activities.

Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, UC San Diego, Visiting Fellows Program

The Center's Visiting Fellows Program is the largest residential fellowship program in the United States for research on Mexico. Each year the program brings together scholars from the social sciences, history, and related fields. We in particular encourage University of California graduate students to apply to the program. The majority of the fellowship awards are for residential periods between 4 and 9 months in duration. Fellowships generally start at the beginning of the academic year and are not given over the summer months (July-September). Stipends are determined by UC general policies and funding availability. Priority will be given to proposals on social policy, public health, governance, discrimination and poverty and local development; although, the Center will consider supporting research in other more general studies.

Boren Graduate Fellowships

Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Morris K. Udall Foundation Native American Congressional Internships

The Native American Congressional Internship Program provides Native Americans and Alaska Natives with an insider's view of the federal government. Our ten-week internship in Washington, D.C., places students in Senate and House offices, committees, Cabinet departments and the White House, where they are able to observe government decision-making processes first-hand. Internships are awarded to Native Americans and Alaska Natives who are college juniors or seniors, recent graduates from tribal or four-year colleges, or graduate or law students and have demonstrated an interest in fields related to tribal public policy, such as tribal governance, tribal law, Native American education, Native American health, Native American justice, natural resource protection, cultural preservation and revitalization, and Native American economic development.

Families USA Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice

During their year-long tenure, Villers Fellows will work on a variety of health care justice issues and develop an understanding of the federal legislation process. They will also be exposed to different advocacy strategies, including producing analytic reports, disseminating effective messages through the media, successful coalition building, and e-advocacy techniques.

Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies Post-Doctoral Fellowship

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, Cologne, awards up to five postdoctoral fellowships each year to researchers from Germany and abroad. The fellowships are for twelve months. Postdoctoral fellows may do research on a topic of their choice. Research projects should relate to the substantive concerns of the institute's research program in economic sociology and political economy (see MPIfG website <www.mpifg.de>, Research). The MPIfG also has independent research groups on the politics of liberalization and on border-crossing institution building.

Council of American Overseas Research Centers
Multi-Country Research Fellowships

Deadline: January 31, 2015

 

The CAORC fellowship program supports advanced regional research. The program is open to US doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. in fields in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences and wish to conduct research of regional or trans-regional significance. Fellowships require scholars to conduct research in more than one country, at least one of which hosts a participating American overseas research center. Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative or cross-regional questions requiring research in two or more countries.

Council of American Overseas Research Centers Mediterranean Regional Research Fellowships

The Mediterranean regional fellowship program enables pre- and early post-doctoral scholars to carry out research in the humanities and related social sciences in countries bordering the Mediterranean and served by American overseas research centers. World Bank Group Internships

Candidates must possess an undergraduate degree and already be enrolled in a full-time graduate study program (pursuing a Master's degree or PhD with plans to return to school in a full-time capacity. Generally, successful candidates have completed their first year of graduate studies or are already into their PhD programs. This internship typically seeks candidates in the following fields: economics, finance, human development (public health, education, nutrition, population), social science (anthropology, sociology), agriculture, environment, private sector development, as well as other related fields. Fluency in English is required.
