China's is expanding its research ability in Antarctica. Last year, the purchase plan for a polar fixed-wing aircraft was approved. The aircraft will have three functions of supplies and personnel transport, scientific investigation, and emergency rescue, and will involve cooperation with international collaborators to ensure its high quality.  Additionally, a feasibility study for a new icebreaker has been submitted for approval.

China's CCTV has reported the secret maiden test flight of the large military transport aircraft Y-20 last year on January 26, 2013. Researchers have nicknamed the plane "pangniu" or "chubby girl." Based on the test flight, the minimum distance for take-off ranges from 600 to 700 meters.
