Supercomputing and Energy in China: 
How Investment in HPC Affects Oil Security

China has raced to the forefront of the global high performance computing (HPC) industry over the past decade, but there remain questions about how fully its supercomputers are being utilized. Oil exploration is a sector that has exhibited a high demand for HPC, with developments in geophysical data processing software closely tracking developments in HPC architecture. This analysis focuses on the application of HPC to oil exploration to examine China's overall progress in supercomputing.

China's Annual Top Science Award Ceremony Held in Beijing

January 10, the 2013 Science and Technology Award Ceremony was held in Beijing. Two Chinese scientists, physical chemist Zhang Cunhao and nuclear weapons expert Cheng Kaijia, won China's top science award for their outstanding contributions to scientific and technological innovation. Addressing the ceremony, Premier Li Keqiang said, "China has entered a new stage in which the country must rely more on sci-tech innovation to guide and support its economic development and social progress." Several other scientists and scientific research programs were awarded at the ceremony, and Chinese leaders Liu Yunshan and Zhang Gaoli were also present at the event.

China Conducts First Test of New Ultra-High Speed Missile Vehicle

China's military last week conducted the first flight test of a new ultra-high speed missile vehicle aimed at delivering warheads through U.S. missile defenses, Pentagon officials said. The hypersonic vehicle represents a major step forward in China's secretive strategic nuclear and conventional military and missile programs.

Xu Dazhe, the new chief of China's space industry, is seeking more international cooperation in Washington less than a month after his country's first successful soft landing on the moon.
