Timber Creek Retreat House 03162015

Roger took Vivien to Timber Creek Retreat House for the weekend for some R&R and to celebrate her Happy 70th Birthday!  Timber Creek Retreat House is like our Home-Away-From-Home!  Tom & Beth Jacobs and Patty & Jeff Lowry provide luxury accommodations and gourmet healthy meals.  Tom lead us in Meditations and he gave us rejuvenating Therapeutic Massages.  Patty & Beth cooked us nutritious organic meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  We took leisurely long walks through the Timbers to the Bridge across the Creek.  We saw herds of White Tail Deer.  Timber Creek Retreat House is a haven of peace, rest and serenity.

TONIGHT, MONDAY:  Joshua Ferris!

Joshua Ferris Photo and Book 01262015
Joshua Ferris, The New York Times Bestselling Author of Then We Came to the End, will discuss his new novel To Rise Again at a Decent Hour.

"Gut-bustingly funny... its wit is so sharp, its fake-biblical texts ... so clever and its reach so big ... It's an eminently worthy nominee for the Booker Prize or any other... a major achievement."
~ Janet Maslin, The New York Times

"To Rise Again at a Decent Hour is beautifully written. It's also funny, thought-provoking, and touching. One hesitates to call it the "Catch-22" of dentistry, but it's sort of in that ballpark. Some books simply carry you along on the strength and energy of the author's invention and unique view of the world. This is one of those books."
~ Stephen King

This Event is Tonight, Monday, March 16, 2015 at 7:00 PM at Rainy Day Books in The Fairway Shops.

FOR SALE NOW:  Malcolm Gladwell presents David and Goliath

Rainy Day Books and Ink's Middle of the Map Fest Forum invite you to an evening with Malcolm Gladwell, whose Books: The Tipping Point, Blink, and Outliers have become cultural touchstones, their ideas reshaping how millions understand the world.

The Event will celebrate the Softcover (Paperback) Publication of David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants, as Malcolm turns his attention to the surprising truth about what happens when ordinary people confront giants that include powerful opponents of all kinds-from armies and mighty warriors to disability, misfortune and oppression.  In the conversation, Malcolm will explain what he means when he says, "Giants are not what we think they are.  The same qualities that appear to give them strength are often the sources of great weakness."  Drawing upon psychology, history, science, business, politics and sports, Malcolm will encourage an understanding that much of what is beautiful and important in our world comes from adversity and struggle, and will leave you with a fresh, new perspective on the world around us.

This Event is Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 7:00 PM at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Helzberg Hall.  Admission Packages are available for purchase NOW directly from the Kauffman Center Box Office.

A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction

A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction

Terry Pratchett

Doubleday Books

A collection of short fiction from Terry Pratchett, spanning the whole of his writing career from schooldays to Discworld and the present day. In the four decades since his first book appeared in print, Terry Pratchett has become one of the world's best-selling and best-loved authors. Here for the first time are his short stories and other short-form fiction collected into one volume. A Blink of the Screen charts the course of Pratchett's long writing career: from his schooldays through to his first writing job on the Bucks Free Press, and the origins of his debut novel, The Carpet People;and on again to the dizzy mastery of the phenomenally successful Discworld series. Here are characters both familiar and yet to be discovered;abandoned worlds and others still expanding;adventure, chickens, death, disco and, actually, some quite disturbing ideas about Christmas, all of it shot through with Terry's inimitable brand of humour. With an introduction by Booker Prize-winning author A.S. Byatt, illustrations by the late Josh Kirby and by Paul Kidby, and drawings by the author himself, this is a book to treasure.

The Stolen Ones

The Stolen Ones

Owen Laukkanen

G.P. Putnam's Sons

"When you've got nothing left, you've got nothing left to lose." Cass County, Minnesota: A sheriff's deputy steps out of a diner on a rainy summer evening, and a few minutes later, he's lying dead in the mud. When BCA agent Kirk Stevens arrives on the scene, he discovers local authorities have taken into custody a single suspect: A hysterical young woman found sitting by the body, holding the deputy's own gun. She has no ID, speaks no English. A mystery woman. The mystery only deepens from there, as Stevens and Carla Windermere, his partner in the new joint BCA-FBI violent crime task force, find themselves on the trail of a massive international kidnapping and prostitution operation. Before the two agents are done, they will have traveled over half the country, from Montana to New York, and come face-to-face not only with the most vicious man either of them has ever encountered--but two of the most courageous women. They are sisters, stolen ones. But just because you're a victim doesn't mean you have to stay one.

The Dragon of Handale: A Mystery

The Dragon of Handale: A Mystery

Cassandra Clark

Minotaur Books

Hildegard, no longer a member of the Cistercian order of nuns, has returned to the priory after more than a year from her pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Still unsure whether she will rejoin the Order, the Prioress suggests that a visit to Handale Priory might help provide some clarity. Used as a house of correction for sinning nuns, it lies in the north of the county in the middle of a vast wood and is run by the ambiguous Abbess Basilda and her close group of hard-faced acolytes. While walking about the grounds, Hildegard discovers the corpse of a young man in the morgue. His body bears deep gashes from neck to groin. His wounds appear to be the ravages of claws, but larger than any animal Hildegard knows of. Is it possible that the young man was killed by a dragon, as Hildegard's been told? Of course, Hildegard does not believe in dragons, and despite being warned against it, she goes for a walk in the woods. There she discovers a secret tower, locked and barred, with armed men on guard. What is so valuable that it needs such protection? Has it anything to do with the mystery of the young man's death? And why have assassins been pursuing the King's courier across the savage moor land only to murder him at a lonely wayside tavern? Hildegard risks all dangers to seek out the truth.

Zach and Kylie's New Year's celebrations are cut short when they're called to the home of billionaire businessman Hunter Alden, Jr. after he makes a grisly discovery in his townhouse garage. When Alden's teenage son goes missing soon afterwards, and his father seems oddly reluctant to find him, Zach and Kylie find themselves in the middle of a chilling conspiracy that threatens everyone in its wake-especially their city's most powerful citizens.
