John L. Bell, 2015 Village Presbyterian Church Visiting Scholar

John L. Bell never ceases to inspire.  A writer for Reformed Worship Magazine says, "He strode onto the sanctuary platform of the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., and quickly captivated the members of the Hymn Society who were gathered there for their annual conference.  His first words were not spoken but sung -'Glory to God' - in his clear, strong voice.  As he sang, everyone sat up straight, and when he extended his arm to invite us to respond, we did.  We all did. . . .Then he began to speak, his voice softened by the rolling cadences of his Scottish brogue. . . . Bell has a message, and he proclaims it with strength."

A native of Kilmarnock, and a member of the Iona Community, John Bell now lives in Glasgow.  He was ordained by the Church of Scotland, and worked in youth ministry before deciding to concentrate on music and worship.  He lectures, preaches and conducts seminars across the denominations in Europe, the Americas, Asia and in Southern Africa.  He is a hymn writer, author, and occasional broadcaster on national radio and television, but retains a primary passion for congregational song.  He has been honored by the Royal School of Church Music, the Hymn Society in the US and Canada, and the University of Glasgow.  His alternative biography states that he is neither leader nor musical director of the Iona Community.  He is simply (with typical modesty) a Wild Goose resource worker.  He does not have a mobile phone, driving license, camera, I-pod or wife.  He has never traced his family origins, played a guitar or eaten a Big Mac.

John says, " While people often forget what they hear preached, they remember what they sing."  [I want to] . . ."find some new ways of speaking about God to the people or about the experience of the people to God."

As the 2015 Visiting Scholar, John will make three presentations sponsored by Presbyterian Women of Village Presbyterian Church:

Friday, February 20, 2015, 7:00 PM
"God's People Find Their Voice" at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Helzberg Hall.

Saturday, February 21, 2015:
9:00 AM, "Gifts of the Global Church" and
10:30 AM, "Rediscovering the Psalms"
Both Saturday presentations will be at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road,  Prairie Village, Kansas 66208.

I Regret Everything: A Love Story

I Regret Everything: A Love Story

Seth Greenland

Europa Editions

A modern love story, I Regret Everything confronts the oceanic uncertainty of what it means to be alive, and in love. Jeremy Best, a Manhattan-based trusts and estates lawyer, leads a second life as published poet Jinx Bell. To his boss's daughter, Spaulding Simonson, at 33 years old, Jeremy is already halfway to dead. When Spaulding, an aspiring 19-year-old writer, discovers Mr. Best's alter poetic ego, the two become bound by a devotion to poetry, and an awareness that time in this world is limited. Their budding relationship strikes at the universality of love and loss, as Jeremy and Spaulding confront their vulnerabilities, revealing themselves to one another and the world for the very first time. A skilled satirist with a talent for biting humor, Greenland creates fully realized characters that quickly reveal themselves as complex renderings of the human condition - at its very best, and utter worst. I Regret Everything explores happiness and heartache with a healthy dose of skepticism, and an understanding that the reality of love encompasses life, death, iambic pentameter, regret, trusts and estates.

One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories

One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories

B. J. Novak

Vintage

A boy wins a $100,000 prize in a box of Frosted Flakes--only to discover how claiming the winnings might unravel his family. A woman sets out to seduce motivational speaker Tony Robbins--turning for help to the famed motivator himself. A new arrival in Heaven, overwhelmed with options, procrastinates over a long-ago promise to visit his grandmother. We also meet Sophia, the first artificially intelligent being capable of love, who falls for a man who might not be ready for it himself; a vengeance-minded hare, obsessed with scoring a rematch against the tortoise who ruined his life; and post-college friends who try to figure out how to host an intervention in the era of Facebook. Along the way, we learn why wearing a red T-shirt every day is the key to finding love, how February got its name, and why the stock market is sometimes just . . . "down." Finding inspiration in questions from the nature of perfection to the icing on carrot cake, "One More Thing" has at its heart the most human of phenomena: love, fear, hope, ambition, and the inner stirring for the one elusive element that might just make a person complete. Across a dazzling range of subjects, themes, tones, and narrative voices, the many pieces in this collection are like nothing else, but they have one thing in common: they share the playful humor, deep heart, sharp eye, inquisitive mind, and altogether electrifying spirit of a writer with a fierce devotion to the entertainment of the reader.

Funny Girl

Funny Girl

Nick Hornby

Riverhead Books

From the bestselling author of High Fidelity, About a Boy, and A Long Way Down comes a highly anticipated new novel. Set in 1960's London, Funny Girl is a lively account of the adventures of the intrepid young Sophie Straw as she navigates her transformation from provincial ingenue to television starlet amid a constellation of delightful characters. Insightful and humorous, Nick Hornby's latest does what he does best: endears us to a cast of characters who are funny if flawed, and forces us to examine ourselves in the process.

Love and Lies: An Essay on Truthfulness, Deceit, and the Growth and Care of Erotic Love

Love and Lies: An Essay on Truthfulness, Deceit, and the Growth and Care of Erotic Love

Clancy Martin

Farrar Straus Giroux

A provocative and unsettling look at the nature of love and deception Is it possible to love well without lying? At least since Socrates's discourse on love in Plato's "Symposium," philosophers have argued that love can lead us to the truth--about ourselves and the ones we love. But in the practical experience of erotic love--and perhaps especially in marriage--we find that love and lies often work hand in hand, and that it may be difficult to sustain long-term romantic love without deception, both of oneself and of others. Drawing on contemporary philosophy, psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience, his own personal experience, and such famed and diverse writers on love as Shakespeare, Stendhal, Proust, Adrienne Rich, and Raymond Carver, Clancy Martin--himself divorced twice and married three times--explores how love, truthfulness, and deception work together in contemporary life and society. He concludes that learning how to love and loving well inevitably requires lying, but also argues that the best love relationships draw us slowly and with difficulty toward honesty and trust.

The Tutor

The Tutor

Andrea Chapin

Riverhead Books

A bold and captivating novel about love, passion, and ambition that imagines the muse of William Shakespeare and the tumultuous year they spend together. The year is 1590, and Queen Elizabeth's Spanish Armada victory has done nothing to quell her brutal persecution of the English Catholics. Katharine de L'Isle is living at Lufanwal Hall, the manor of her uncle, Sir Edward. Taught by her cherished uncle to read when a child, Katharine is now a thirty-one-year-old widow. She has resigned herself to a life of reading and keeping company with her cousins and their children. But all that changes when the family's priest, who had been performing Catholic services in secret, is found murdered. Faced with threats of imprisonment and death, Sir Edward is forced to flee the country, leaving Katharine adrift in a household rife with turmoil. At this time of unrest, a new schoolmaster arrives from Stratford, a man named William Shakespeare. Coarse, quick-witted, and brazenly flirtatious, Shakespeare swiftly disrupts what fragile peace there is left at Lufanwal. Katharine is at first appalled by the boldness of this new tutor, but when she learns he is a poet, and one of talent, things between them begin to shift, and soon Katharine finds herself drawn into Shakespeare's verse, and his life, in ways that will change her forever.

The Forgotten Girls

The Forgotten Girls

Sara Blaedel

Grand Central Publishing

Four days later, Louise Rick still had no answers. The body of an unidentified woman was discovered in a local forest. A large, unique scar on one side of her face should have made the identification easy, but nobody has reported her missing. As the new commander of the Missing Persons Department, Louise risks involving the media by releasing a photo of the victim, hoping to find someone who knew her.Louise's gamble pays off: an older woman phones to say that she recognizes the woman as Lisemette, a child she once cared for in the state mental institution many years ago. Lisemette, like the other children in the institution, was abandoned by her family and branded a "forgotten girl." But Louise soon discovers something more disturbing: Lisemette had a twin, and both girls were issued death certificates more than thirty years ago. Aided by her friend journalist Camilla Lind, Louise finds that the investigation takes a surprising and unsettling turn when it brings her closer to her childhood home. And as she uncovers more crimes that were committed-and hidden-in the forest, she is forced to confront a terrible link to her own past that has been carefully concealed.

The Nightingale

Kristin Hannah

St. Martin's Press

FRANCE, 1939 In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France...but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive. Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gaetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can...completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others.
