Dear MLNNA Community,

Lately I've been reflecting on the communities to which I belong. Community has many definitions and most of them are applicable to all of us one way or anotherBeyond our neighborhoods and local communities, national and international events - including the release of Pope Francis' Laudato Si -remind me that I'm part of something larger than myself. Some communities are voluntary and some I'm a part of by my very existence on earth. The voluntary ones involved a choice on my part, requiring intentionality and commitment. I have a sense of community among some of my closest friends. I view my parish as a community (not just place to go to church on Sunday). I belong to a local MLC. I belong to the Visitation Marianist State Community. I'm active in my civic community and try to be engaged in (or at least aware of) issues around the country and world.

Having been to international and national assemblies of Lay Marianists, and having had the privilege to attend the Brothers' assembly in June, I'reminded that while we call ourselves the Marianist Family, at our core we are collectively a faith community. We share the Marianist charism but live that charism in a number of ways as lay and religious, whether in community in Marianist hot spots or in other corners of the world. As the Marianist Family, we use phrases like "we are a community of communities." In my mind's eye, however, we are one community, whose members - lay and religious -live various commitments. To me, as a lay person, MLNNA is more than a national membership organization of lay people. We are more than just a branch of the family tree. We are a faith community, diverse in our own composition and geography. Wherever we are located and whatever our connection, we are part of something larger.

Each community provides for me and nourishes me in multiple ways. But being part of a community comes with responsibilities (aka commitment). I have a responsibility for all of humankind, for all of God's creation. I vote. I write to legislators. I stay informed. I have a duty to my neighbors and local community. I exercise my conscience and direct my resources accordinglyI volunteer. I participate.   contribute time, talent and treasure to my parish. I contribute time, talent and treasure to my Marianist communities. And I contribute time, talent, and treasure to my larger Marianist community - the Marianist Lay Network and other works within the Marianist Family.

This editorial isn't to boast. I extend to you an invitation to reflecton your own involvement in the various communities in your life. Do you feel connected to something larger? Are you committed to it? Are you doing what you can to support and sustain what nourishes you? Regardless of your local involvement, within our lay network we hope you know you're part of a faith community with others like you all over the country (and world)!

Your brother in Christ,

Matt Dunn

MLNNA Update

One year ago at the 2014 Assembly we rolled out a new strategic plan and leadership model. Since that time, the new leadership team has been working to team-build and plan how to implement the goals.  We are making progress in putting programs together, addressing key issues of Lay Marianist identity, and building an infrastructure for MLNNA to sustain it for many years to come.

And while all that is happening, we are beginning to plan for the next Assembly in 2017 and we would like your input and suggestions.  Please contact Mike Wasno.
Volunteer Opportunities
As Matt reflected above, it takes intention, commitment, and effort to be and build community.   If you would like to offer your talents and gifts to support MLNNA, please contact us.

We are looking for a number of people to help plan and organize the 2017 Assembly.

We are looking for 3-4 people to help with planning and developing Web-based Meetings.

If you are can help, please contact Mike Wasno .  Thank you.
Community Highlights
The North East Family Council is sponsoring a Picnic this Saturday (8/15) at the Philadelphia Center.  Contact Pati Krasensky for more details.

August 8 & 9 members of Marianist Lay Communities participated in a retreat with Fr. Ted Cassidy at Governor's Island near Dayton. They were 18 young adults who have gone through  formation with Joan and Aj Wagner.

On Saturday, August 8, the Brothers in the Dayton-Cincinnati area celebrated jubilees.  Congratulations!

The Micah Marianist Lay Community in Dayton celebrated 15 years with a picnic this month.  Congratulations!

We are asking members of the Marianist Family who attend the World Meeting of Families to take pictures and send them to us. It's a great way to connect us to the larger church.

MSJC's - Marianist Call to Advance Justice
Time is Running Out - Schedule your MCAJ Workshop before Dec 2015!

Is your Marianist lay community or group interested in a stimulating, challenging formation opportunity that will plunge you more deeply into our call as Lay Marianists?

Are you open to hearing the call of the Holy Spirit anew and discerning together what that call might mean for your community or group?

Would you appreciate having a different kind of gathering, led by a trained facilitator that includes time for prayer, education, reflection and discussion?

If so, then consider scheduling a Marianist Call to Advance Justice workshop.  It's an initiative of the Marianist Family that is aimed at helping each community to respond more fully to our call to justice.

The workshop takes three hours and will help your community to:

  • Affirm and reflect on what you are currently doing to respond to social injustice;

  • Determine what you want to do in the future to develop your community's commitment to building a more just and peaceful world.

For more information, contact Jim Vogt (jimvogt2@yahoo.com).

Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation
Our Marianist Charism reminds us that we are continuously being formed by Mary to be Christ to the world.  The Virtual Learning Center provides opportunities for us to deepen our understanding of our Marianist Life and our Catholic Faith (and much more).

The VLC will be offering the following Marianist Study programs developed by NACMS.  You may want to register as an individual to meet and learn along with others in the Marianist Family.  Or, if your community would like to take a course as a group, contact Patti Gehred at NACMS to learn about reserving a course for your group.  For details about these courses and more, go here

MARY'S SCHOLARS - LAUNCHED IN PHILADELPHIA
A new video-teleconferencing learning community has been developed by MLFI Alumni Dr. Diane Browne, a member of Philadelphia's MLC. The new community, Mary's Scholars, will address t  he needs of Marianists interested in studying the "classics" of Mariology and applying insights to the understanding and practice of Marianist spirituality. The idea for the community came after Diane completed her Certification in Marianist Studies through the University of Dayton's Virtual Learning Community Faith Formation program (VLCFF). Diane wanted to continue her studies by returning to the rich and historic publications often referenced in VLCFF classes and to enjoy them with other Marianists. The aim of the community is to ground participants in core documents read or written by the Marianist Founders and early scholars, as well as to study contemporary Marianist writings that are influential today.

Diane stated that by facilitating a "movement of ideas anchored in an accurate understanding of 'things Marianist,' participants will be better prepared for whatever mission field they are called to - whether academic or as lay leaders. The community also offers opportunity for ongoing formation for those who have completed some Marianist study and want to continue to grow in community with other Marianists, but lack geographical access to an MLC. Mary's Scholars meets twice monthly for one hour and will read and discuss one book or publication at a time.

Currently Mary's Scholars is studying "The Imitation of Mary," by Thomas a' Kempis. Br. Stan Zubeck, S.M has agreed to serve as their advisor. Participants hail from three states and two time zones. Through the use of Fuze, an online host site free to participants and costing only a small monthly fee for the Facilitator, participants can see and hear each other in real time.

If you are interested in participating in this Mary's Scholars community or starting a Mary's Scholar's community of your own, contact Diane at via email or call 301.520.2723
