Greetings Art Lovers:

Here in the Mid-Hudson Valley region, we are feeling the warmth of holiday preparations and unseasonably warm temperatures. As we move towards the shortest day of the year, many celebrations include lights. During 2015, we hope that Arts Mid-Hudson has been a light in your year. If you are able to give towards our regional arts and culture, whether it is volunteering or a year-end donationwe would be grateful.

We have enjoyed the steady stream of shoppers at our Dutchess Handmade PopUp Shop. Come by and see the immense talent of our artist neighbors and shop local. We are open late on Monday, December 14, Wednesday, December 16, and Tuesday, December 22nd for your convenience.

This weekend has many holiday themed offerings. It's Beacon Second Saturday and the action begins mid-afternoon at Polhilll Park/Beacon Visitors Center, stay for the Bicycle Tree Lighting and bring something to add to the tree. Sculptor Ed Benavente is the artist behind this unique Beacon tradition. "Bicycles, like communities, are powered by people," states Benavente. The tree, which has doubled in size since its inaugural appearance in 2011, is fabricated entirely of recycled bicycle parts. After the tree lighting, stroll up Main Street where a number of galleries have openings and special holiday offerings including Makers on the Hudson at the Howland Cultural Center.

What would the holidays be without the Nutcracker? This weekend the New Paltz Ballet Theatre performs The Nutcracker at the Bardavon.

Have you ever wondered what the world would be like without you? The classic movie, It's a Wonderful Life, shows how you make a difference in the world - featured at The Moviehouse as part of Millerton's village-wide celebration of the holiday season. This special free community event will put you into the holiday spirit! Sunday, December 13 at 11:00 a.m. , doors open at 10:30 a.m.

In the mood for a winter concert? This weekend Ars Choralis presents, Welcome Yule: Sing Joy! in Kingston and Woodstock.

Saturday night the Artists' Collective of Hyde Park has an opening for an exhibit of small works for the holidays, Joy to the World: 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Opening this weekend at the CENTER for Performing Arts, the holiday classic "Miracle on 34th Street," is presented by The Rhinebeck Theatre Society and directed by Russ Austin. And Shadowland Theatre presents "Greetings" in Ellenville; "A wonderful, wacky look at how cleverly a mixture of Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Age philosophy can-in the right hands-flick on the electricity..." - LA Times.

Call for community volunteers: Arts Mid-Hudson is strongly committed to creating a diverse and welcoming environment for Grant Review Panels. In a continuing effort to reflect the communities we serve, we invite you to recommend panelists to serve in reviewing grants across Dutchess, Orange and Ulster Counties. We welcome community members of diverse artistic, administrative and cultural backgrounds. Our next panel meetings will be in late January. Individuals may also nominate themselves. For more info, email: [email protected].
