Millionaires on Medicaid?
Mark J. Warshawsky

A recent opinion piece in The
Wall Street Journal entitled "
Millionaires on Medicaid" charges that many Medicaid-covered residents of nursing homes are millionaires. Mark J. Warshawsky, an American Enterprise Institute scholar who was vice chairman of the federal Commission on Long-Term Care, gets to this figure by combining the upper limit on home equity of $814,000 (in 2014) with the limit on countable assets for the spouse of the nursing home resident of $117,240 (in 2014). Never-mind that these don't quite add up $1 million, he provides no realistic alternatives to our current imperfect system.

DPH Issues New Regulations for Dementia Special Care Units

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) unveiled new regulations for Dementia Special Care Units (CSU) to improve care for the 60% of nursing home residents that have some form of dementia. The new regulations are intended to close a loophole that previously allowed nursing homes and assisted living facilities to offer "specialized" Alzheimer's or dementia care units without requiring their staff to have specialized training in caring for residents with dementia and without requiring special activities or a physical design to meet the needs of such residents.

The new regulations create standards in training direct care staff, require facilities to develop meaningful activities tailored for residents with dementia, and establish guidelines for a DSCU's physical design.
