How Should Lawyers Charge?

Lawyers are expensive, some more M&B Blog
than others. However, their fees vary
greatly and their systems of charging
fees vary as well, including: hourly fees, flat fees, contingency arrangements, and hybrids, or combinations of fee arrangements.
None of these systems are perfect for either lawyers or clients. The good news, however, is that many attorneys and firms are moving toward arrangements that encourage efficiency and better match the interests of lawyers to their clients.

What Is a "First-Party" Special Needs Trust and When Is It Useful?

A Special Needs Trust (SNT) can play an important role in preserving the financial security and lifestyle of a person with special needs. A properly drafted SNT allows the individual to benefit from the trust property while still qualifying for public benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid. Generally, when a parent or guardian wishes to establish and fund a trust for the benefit of a minor child, the attorney recommends a "third-party" SNT be set up for the child. But, when the person with special needs has his or her own assets, another option may be more appropriate: the "first-party" or "self-settled" SNT.

is best?  And what if I want to change plans?

Lucy Meadows, a licensed health insurance advisor who does not sell insurance, will help you find good answers to those questions, at our March Lunch for Professionals. She will explain how Medicare works, pros and cons of various choices, and how to enroll. Bring your questions!

The program, which is aimed at professionals who work with seniors and people with disabilities, will be from noon to 1:00 pm on March 3rd at our Copley Square office and lunch will be served.
