Globe Describes Growing Wave of Elder Financial Abuse
An article in The Boston Globe describes how predators are increasingly targeting seniors for financial scams. A mixture of vulnerability, dementia and isolation can make them relatively easy targets. There are more than 7,000 -- almost 20 a day -- reports of financial abuse to Massachusetts Protective Services each year, and that's only the reported cases. At the urging of State Representative Paul Brodeur, who is a former general counsel of the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, a special state commission is due to make recommendations later this month for beefing up financial protections of seniors. Before they become targets, seniors can protect themselves by doing estate planning. One of the most protective devices is a revocable trust which appoints a co-trustee to help manage accounts and pay bills. To read the entire Globe article, click here.
