Dear Veterinary Colleague,

Dr. David Bruyette Welcome to our Fall 2015 edition of The Veterinary ReporterOur latest issue features articles about diabetic ketoacidosis and updates on dexamethasone suppression testing. We also present two interesting case studies -- a complete thoracoscopic lung lobectomy for pulmonary papillary carcinoma and an unusual foreign body in a dog. On news, we're very excited to announce the launch of our new Zoological Medicine and Surgery Department, and we wanted to share our veterinarians' latest peer-reviewed articles with you.

As always, please let us know if we can ever be of assistance to you, your clients and patients -- we're here to help! On behalf of everyone at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, I would like to express our sincere thanks for your continued support. We wish you a very joyous holiday and all the very best in the New Year!

Surgery Case Study

COMPLETE THORACOSCOPIC LUNG LOBECTOMY FOR PULMONARY PAPILLARY CARCINOMA
Thoracoscopic Lung Lobectomy in dog
Moose, a 13-year-old Labrador Retriever, was referred to VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital for evaluation of a one month history of progressive hacking/retching, increased urination and drinking and 5 days of decreased appetite. Chest radiographs from his local veterinarian revealed an oval soft tissue mass in the cranial left lung. After additional diagnostics at WLA, the mass was identified as an epithelial neoplasm consistent with well-differentiated carcinoma. Because of its location at the periphery of the lung and relatively small size, a video-assisted minimally-invasive thoracoscopic (VATS) procedure was elected over traditional surgery.

LINEAR FOREIGN BODY IN A 13-YEAR-OLD
JACK RUSSELL TERRIER MIX
Linear Foreign Body in dog
Trudy, a 13-year-old female Jack Russell terrier mix, presented to the Internal Medicine service for evaluation of acute onset of vomiting and lethargy. Initial diagnostics were unremarkable and her vomiting was resolved, but her condition suddenly deteriorated with onset of respiratory distress. Repeat imaging and CT revealed pulmonary issues and the cause -- an unusual linear foreign body.
