Spring 2015
|
Dear Veterinary Colleague,
|
Welcome to our Spring 2015 edition of The Veterinary Reporter! In this issue, we talk about feline acromegaly, an uncommon and perhaps underdiagnosed disease in older male cats and also provide a brief overview of canine soft tissue sarcomas and recommended therapies. We also present an article about a serious ophthalmic syndrome seen in golden retrievers and a literature review of two important studies on sodium disorders in veterinary patients. On news items, we are very excited to announce the launch of our Total Hip Replacement Program. Finally, we have added another active clinical study evaluating an osteoarthritis therapy that we are seeking candidate patients for and hope you will consider us for needed referrals to the program. We thank you for your past support of our studies -- it's been such a tremendous help to us and toward making the advances we need in veterinary medicine!
Please let us know if you have questions or would like additional information about any of the topics we've presented in this issue. Let us know also how we can be of assistance to you, your clients and patients. Our sincere thanks for your continuing support and trust.

FELINE ACROMEGALY
Feline acromegaly is likely an underdiagnosed disease in older male cats, especially those with insulin-resistant diabetes. Characterized by excessive growth hormone (GH) secretion, leading to a wide array of clinical signs, it can be misdiagnosed as complications associated with diabetes mellitus. No single diagnostic test for acromegaly exists. This article provides a overview of diagnostics and various treatment options.

CANINE SOFT TISSUE SARCOMAS: BRIEF OVERVIEW AND RECOMMENDED THERAPEUTIC APPROACH
|
Soft tissue sarcomas are commonly seen in middle aged to older dogs with no specific breed or sex predilection; however, medium and large breed dogs do seem to be overrepresented. The overall prognosis for dogs with soft tissue sarcomas is good, but the range of biological behavior for these tumors can be broad. This article provides an overview of the etiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, signalment, history, clinical signs, diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis for canine soft tissue sarcomas.

GOLDEN RETRIEVER PIGMENTARY AND
CYSTIC GLAUCOMA
|

Golden Retriever Pigmentary and Cystic Glaucoma is an ocular syndrome described as the presence of pigment dispersion onto lenticular, iridal, and corneal endothelium in the golden retriever. The etiology of this syndrome is poorly understood, however, genetic factors have been proposed. This is a serious condition because it is chronic and can result in vision loss. This article discusses history, clinical signs, treatment and prognosis.

LITERATURE REVIEW: DISORDERS OF SODIUM METABOLISM IN VETERINARY PATIENTS
|
This literature review focuses on two university teaching hospital studies that examined the incidence of and prognosis associated with hypernatremia and hyponatremia in study populations of 16,691 dogs and 4,211 cats. These studies underscore the importance of carefully monitoring hydration and electrolyte status and altering fluid therapy as needed in our veterinary patients.
