CALCIUM DISORDERS IN
DOGS AND CATS
  
Disorders of calcium metabolism are common endocrine disorders in both dogs and cats. In this article we present a logical diagnostic approach to patients with both hyper- and hypocalcemia and provide information on the management of these disorders.

Pink Case Study Cardiology Case Study
PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS IN A FOUR-MONTH-OLD NEWFOUNDLAND 
   
This case study discusses closure of a patent ductus arteriosus via percutaneous transarterial embolization
 with an Amplatz canine ductal occluder on "Pink," a
female, four-month old Newfoundland. We also provide
a review of PDA's in dogs.

VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital is currently conducting four clinical studies that our hospital is actively seeking participant cases for from veterinarians.  (1)  Yunnan Baiyao Study
       This trial evaluates the effect of Yunnan Baiyao on coagulability in dogs
       with hemangiosarcoma using Thromboelastography (TEG).

(2)  Thromboelastography (TEG) Study
       Thromboelastography (TEG) provides a global assessment of coagulation
       status and VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital is the only hospital in
       Southern California with the capability to evaluate TEG. We are currently 
       investigating the ability of TEG to predict antivenin needs for dogs that
       have been bitten by rattlesnakes.

(3)  Feline y/d Study
      A clinical study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Hill's Feline y/d in
      the management of clinical signs and biochemical abnormalities in cats 
      with newly diagnosed hyperthyroidism.

(4)  Laparoscopic-assisted Cystotomy Study
      Our hospital is enrolling cats with confirmed cystic calculi for an on-going
      study to compare the surgical times, postoperative pain and outcomes
      between laparoscopic-assisted cystotomy and traditional open cystotomy.
