May 2015 e-Alerts Digest         INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX
Missed the May 1 Deadline? one

Virginia grants an automatic six-month extension from the original due date to file your individual income tax return. However, the automatic extension does not allow for additional time to pay any balance of tax due. Penalty and/or interest may apply to returns with a tentative tax due that was not paid by the original due date for filing the return. Also, the extension penalty may apply to returns filed during the extension period if less than 90 percent of the return's total tax liability was paid by the original due date.

If you are filing during the extension period, take a few minutes to do the following:
  • Check your records to see if you made any estimated payments in 2014 or received a tax refund. If so, be sure to enter the accurate amounts on your return.
  • If you want to receive a refund by direct deposit, verify your bank account information.
  • Be sure your name and address are entered correctly.

Go to our website to file electronically for fast and secure processing.

Where's My Refund?three

Generally, if you file your return electronically, your refund will be processed in about one week. To reduce the risk of refund fraud, we are using various processes to validate tax refunds prior to issuance. These additional processes could delay the receipt of your refund.

You can check the status of your refund in two ways:

  • Check the status by going to Online Lookup. You will need to enter your social security number, the tax year of the return you filed and the amount of the refund you are expecting.
  • Call (804) 367-2486 to check the status 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will need to enter your SSN and the amount of the refund you are expecting.

If you filed your tax return on paper, your refund could take up to seven weeks to process.

If you mailed your tax return using certified mail, it could take one to three weeks for us to receive your return from the U.S. Post Office.
