There are several e-File options:
  • Free File: If your federal adjusted gross income is less than $60,000 you may qualify for this free program to file your federal and state returns. To use the free service, you must access one of the approved Free File Software products through our website.
  • Free Fillable Forms: If you don't qualify for Free File, you can use a free, fillable online version of the Form 760 return and schedules. The fillable version looks similar to the paper form with the benefit of simple math calculations being done for you. As with the other electronic filing options, you will get your refund faster. Please note, fillable forms does not support filing all returns or schedules you may need. To see what returns and schedules are supported, visit the Fillable Forms Frequently Asked Questions.
  • Paid e-File: Paid e-File is for taxpayers who are not eligible for Free File and prefer an electronic filing program that prepares the return through a series of questions that ask only for information relevant to the type of return filed. Many of these programs charge a small fee and can be purchased online or in a store.

Tips for Paper Filersfifteen

If you file on paper:

  • Consider using the Fillable PDF Forms that are available. These PDFs allow you to type in your information, save the completed form to your computer for future reference, print the return and mail it to the department for processing. Machine printed returns are much easier to process than handwritten returns. Always mail both page 1 and page 2 of the return along with any applicable schedules.
  • Check your math and complete all required lines. Omissions and simple math errors on paper returns are a common reason for delays in getting your refund.
  • Attach all required documents to your return, such as: W-2s, 1099s, VK-1s, and any other necessary schedules or attachments. Make sure all schedules and attachments have the primary taxpayer's social security number at the top of the documents.
  • Print legibly and use black ink. Do not use metallic ink. Information that is difficult to read may cause delays in processing your return.
  • Send your return by regular mail. If you send your return by certified mail, this requires special handling by the U.S. Post Office and the Tax Department which will slow down processing of your return.

Individual income tax forms and instructions are available on our website.

Making Tax Paymentssixteen

If you owe a balance of tax due with your return, be sure to make payment using one of the options appropriate to your filing method:

  • If you file electronically: Most electronic tax software allows you to make payments of any tax owed via Direct Debit when you file. You can also schedule Direct Debit payments for a later date, up to the due date for filing your return, by warehousing your payment information.
  • If you file on paper and send your return to the Department of Taxation: Make payment directly to the Department of Taxation. If you do not send a check payment with your return, see our Payment Options Frequently Asked Questions for alternatives to make your payment.
  • If you file on paper and send your return to your local county or city: Make payment to the Treasurer or Director of Finance for that locality. Contact your locality for assistance with payment options.
