TOP STORY:  Edwards Lifesciences Leads Harpoon Medical Round 
Baltimore's Harpoon Medical announces an agreement with Edwards Lifesciences providing cash to Harpoon and an acquisition option to Edwards.  The funds will advance Harpoon's clinical trial required for regulatory approval in Europe. Harpoon Medical is a UMB spin-out which has used several different types of State funds available to early stage biotech companies to support the early development of Harpoon's minimally invasive heart mitral valve repair technology. Harpoon expects to expand from twelve to twenty employees during 2016.

Rockville's Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. completes its acquisition of R-Tech Ueno.

Gaithersburg's Wellstat receives FDA approval of VISTOGARD, the first antidote to treat overdoses and early-onset severe toxicities due to 5-FU and capecitabine chemotherapies.

Rockville's Therabron Therapeutics announces favorable infant outcomes with six-month follow-up of a phase 1b recombinant human CC10 (rhCC10) clinical trial.

Gaithersburg's Emergent BioSolutions receives FDA approval to expand the label of BioThrax® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed) to include post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

Columbia's Medifocus, Inc. commercializing minimally invasive treatment systems used in treatment of cancerous and benign tumors, and BPH closes $785,000 financing. 

Germantown's Intrexon working through subsidiary to reduce outbreak of mosquito borne Zika virus and related congenital birth defects in Brazil. 

Baltimore's PathSensors receives contract from U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security for biosecurity including development of sensors to detect Ebola and Abrin.

UM Baltimore grants Baltimore's Pataigin, LLC, rights to technology developed for rapid, point-of-care identification of dangerous pathogens.

Baltimore's Sinai Hospital is the location of a new LifeBridge BioIncubator providing options for lab space from 90 to 320 square feet.  The space will be available in early 2016. 

Bethesda's RightEye says it's developed a game changer for diagnosing concussions.

Partial reimbursement for internships is available to biohealth technology companies which offer internship positions to MD Tech Connect's prescreened applicants.

NIH's Nano Startup Challenge in Cancer is open for entries until February 11, 2016.
