TOP STORY:   MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE
On Oct. 1st, Governor Larry Hogan announced the formation of the Maryland Department of Commerce and appointed Mike Gill as the state's first Secretary of Commerce. Formerly known as the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED), the Dept. of Commerce will focus on attracting, retaining, and expanding businesses and creating jobs in Maryland. The department also will place a renewed focus on better serving the diverse industries and geographic regions of the state, and on marketing Maryland's many assets to companies across the nation and abroad.  Those working with bio and health related industry sectors will be supported by the Dept. of Commerce's Office of BioHealth Technology

Rockville's REGENXBIO, a leader in AAV gene therapy, closed its IPO with gross proceeds of $159.4 million.  The company also announced its RGX-111 Gene Therapy for the Treatment of Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I (MPS I) received Orphan Drug Designation from the FDA. 

Germantown's Intrexon, a leader in synthetic biology, establishes its first collaboration with a dedicated fund sponsored by Harvest Capital Strategies, LLC and believed to be the world's first fund dedicated to the inventions and discoveries of a single company.  

Gaithersburg's Novavax receives a grant worth up to $89 million from the Gates Foundation to support the Phase 3 clinical trial its RSV F Vaccine to protect infants, as well as license and WHO prequalification activities required to potentially make it available in the developing world. 

Baltimore's Harpoon Medical announces 100% procedural success in its first ten patients enrolled in an early feasibility study. The company also recently received $1.4 million in investments as it plans for a larger clinical study to take place next year. 

Rockville's IDT Biologika opens U.S. HQ with launch of its vaccine development and manufacturing facility providing early development capabilities for the human vaccine market. 

Rockville's CASI Pharmaceuticals focused on innovative therapeutics addressing cancer and other unmet medical needs for the global market announces $25.1M private placement.

Alexandria LaunchLabs ™ located at 708 Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg, Maryland will open its doors this November.

Baltimore's PathSensors receives SBIR from USDA to support development of a multi-sample testing platform for rapid, facile identification of plant pathogens.

Gaithersburg's MedImmune partners with 3M Drug Delivery Systems to develop novel TLR agonist cancer therapies. 

Sparks's BD Life Sciences receives FDA clearance for BD Max Enteric Parasite Panel.

Gaithersburg's Vtesse, Inc. initiates Phase 2b/3 clinical trial of VTS-270 for treatment of Niemann-Pick Type C1 (NPC) Disease.

Silver Spring's PharmaCyte Biotech in process of securing European Medicines Agency (EMA) Orphan Designation for its pancreatic cancer treatment.

Frederick's RoosterBio partners with PBS Biotech to market Mesenchymal Stem/Stromal Cell Bioreactor Expansion Kits and with CELLINK to launch industry's first living cellular bioink kits.

Baltimore's Sisu Global Health wins Steve Case's Rise of the Rest pitch competition and Tissue Analytics wins Baltimore Innovation's Best Web/Mobile Product of the Year award.

Bethesda's Evidera announces nextgen, cloud-based, healthcare data analysis software.

Vixiar, Sonavex, Harpoon Medical, and NIH are featured this week at AdvaMed2015.

Johns Hopkins joins forces with DuPont to produce an improved Ebola protection suit.
 
CMS released final meaningful use rules designed to simplify requirements and add new flexibilities for providers to make EHR available when and where it matters most, and support patients' access to their health information. Stage 3 still must be implemented by 2018.

Partial reimbursement for internships is available to biohealth technology companies who offer intern positions to MD Tech Connect's prescreened applicants.  For more info, click here
