Rockville's Sanaria  announces a $48.5M agreement with the Republic of Equatorial Guinea and its oil sector partners to support the clinical development of SanariaŽ PfSPZ Vaccine against malaria, including a series of clinical trials from 2015 through 2018.

Frederick's  Southern Research has been awarded contract worth up to $22 Million from NIAID-DAIDS to support ground-breaking HIV cure research.

Columbia's Shimadzu Scientific, Inc., manufacturer of medical devices and other instruments, announces a $20M expansion--including a new innovation center for product research.

Rockville's GlycoMimetics receives $20 million payment from Pfizer following initiation of Phase 3 Trial with Rivipansel.   

Baltimore's Personal Genome Diagnostics raises $4.3M in ongoing Series A. A Hopkins spin-out, the company analyzes the DNA of tumors to better diagnose cancer.

Baltimore health IT company, Avhana Health, closes $750K round and plans to hire. 

Gaithersburg's Novavax expands into new 54K R&D facility; and also is manufacturing a vaccine for potential Phase 3 clinical trials of its leading vaccine candidate for RSV. 

Baltimore's Proscia launches Proscia Connect™ collaboration tool using its cloud-based platform to facilitate collaboration among global pathology experts in the fight against cancer.

Silver Spring's United Therapeutics plans to build new 121,724 square foot building and hire 100 employees during the next three to six years. 

College Park's Remedium received FDA approval to market its Hemogrip product which acts to stop traumatic bleeding. 

Columbia's TEDCO advances its Executive Exchange program supporting entrepreneurs.  

Baltimore's Athena Enzyme Systems unit has partnered with Chromacon to represent the ContichromŽ CUBE chromatography systems in the U.S.

Silver Spring's Lung Biotechnology and PERFUSIX USA are making progress with their recycled lungs providing hope for patients who need new lungs which are in limited supply.

University of Maryland's Institute of Virology receives $24.5 million grant from CDC to fight AIDS epidemic in Botswana. 

Gaithersburg's Seracare expands its R&D and operations facility.  Company also signs CRADA with the National Cancer Institute to advance cancer diagnostics. 

Baltimore's PathSensors receives $100K grant from USDA to protect American plants from foreign pathogens using its rapid, facile pathogen detection platform.

Hopkins spinout MultiSensorDiagnostics moves forward with MII funding to commercialize hand-held "MouthLab" device for the detection of patient vital signs and more. 

Columbia's Vixiar Medical, developing a portable, non-invasive device that allows remote monitoring of CHFpatients, is named Semifinalist in Medtech Innovator awards program.

Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland will jointly operate a new $30 million super computer facility in Baltimore strengthening their data analytics research capabilities. 

FDA exempts 120 medical devices from premarket notification and review requirements, reducing the cost for development of these devices (RAPS).

Montgomery County Council votes to privatize the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development.

Rockville's Relevant Health tech accelerator is accepting applications for its fall cohort.

BIO International 2015 Spotlight

Maryland DBED Deputy Secretary Ben Wu hosted 100+ industry leaders from Maryland at a BioMaryland Leadership Breakfast held during the 2015 BIO International Conference in Philadelphia.  More than 150 biotech organizations from  Maryland attended the conference--participating in partnering, networking and educational activities.  
The BioMaryland Center is the office within Maryland's Department of Business and Economic Development which connects life sciences companies, academic and federal researchers with each other and with potential sources of capital, partners, and clients. 

The Center promotes the State's industry domestically and abroad and also provides business plan assistance, market research databases, site selection information, and other resources.
