TOP STORY: Analytical Informatics & Sonavex Surgical Named
                       Top Start-Ups at 2015 JHU-UMB Innovation Showcase
$200,000 in prizes were awarded at this week's JHU-UMB Innovation Showcase recognizing faculty innovator and university startups demonstrating strong commercialization potential. JHU spinout Sonavex Surgical, developing an improved post-operative vessel clot detection system, and UMB spinout Analytical Informatics, developing innovative health IT systems for clinicians focused initially on radiology, each received $25,000 prizes from BioMaryland. Four faculty innovators from UMB and Hopkins School of Medicine also received prizes.

Germantown's Intrexon completes acquisition of Okanagan Specialty Fruits (OSF).

Gaithersburg's Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals, Inc. receives orphan drug designation for STP-206 for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis.

Rockville's 
Immunomic Therapeutics, Inc. receives SBIR grant from NIH for Nanoplasmid peanut allergy vaccine development. 

Gaithersburg's GenVec announces collaboration with the Laboratory of Malaria Immunology and Vaccinology (LMIV) and the NIAID, NIH.

Rockville's KeyGene USA is celebrating the opening of its new, expanded North and South American HQ co-located at IBBR on April 30th.  RSVP required.

Analytical Informatics, Avhana Health, Vheda Health and Fyodor's Eddy Agbo named finalists for 2015 TEDCO ICE (Innovation, Corp. Excellence, Entrepreneurship) awards. 

Abell Foundation $50K winners at the JHU-UMB showcase were UMd School of Medicine Professors Macko, Rov and Forrester, developing a bio-based software engine for adpative control of modular robots for clinical neurorehabilitation; and Hopkins School of Medicine's Prof. Bosmans for his work treating epilepsy with novel triazole compounds.

University sponsored $25K prizes at the JHU-UMB showcase went to Professors Depireux and Masri at UM School of Dentistry for research on magnetic delivery of therapeutic nanoparticles to dental pulp, and to Kannan Rangaramanujam, developing targeted nanotherapies for cerebral palsy at Johns Hopkins.

Pfizer launches its first annual PCSK9 competitive grants program to advance cardiovascular disease research.

UMBC's partnership with Northrop Grumman expands to include health data analytics.

NCATS supported research shows repurposed AZ drug may impact Alzheimer's.  

TEDCO receives $500K grant to support early stage medical device development. 

The FDA finalizes its accelerated approval pathway for critical devices and aims to get med tech to market faster.

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures names Cleveland Clinic Innovations leader as new Executive Director of Technology Transfer. 

Alexandria Real Estate Equities will open a new wet lab incubator, Alexandria LaunchLabs in the City of Gaithersburg.  BioHealth Innovation is supporting this incubator and also, with ProductSavvy and Montgomery County, a new health accelerator, Relevant Health.

BioMaryland has a limited number of exhibit hall only passes (excludes access to program and networking events) to the 2015 BIO Int'l Conference in Philadelphia this summer. Requests for these passes are being accepted on a first come-first served basis thru May 1.

Bethesda's Brain Bio, developer of portable PET
imaging for Alzheimer's and other neurological
diseases, is exhibiting at the American Academy of Neurology conference in DC this week. 

The BioMaryland Center is the office within Maryland's Department of Business and Economic Development which connects life sciences companies, academic and federal researchers with each other and with potential sources of capital, partners, and clients. 

The Center promotes the state's industry domestically and abroad and also provides business plan assistance, market research databases, site selection information, and other resources.
