Mueller is Excited to Return to Coronado

School Board Unanimously Approves Employment Contract for New Superintendent Karl Mueller

Last night the Coronado Unified School District Governing Board unanimously approved a three-year employment contract for their new Superintendent Karl Mueller beginning July 1, 2016. Mr. Mueller replaces current Coronado Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Jeff Felix, who is retiring after 30 years in education. The approval of the contract was in a regular meeting of the Board held after a "Meet & Greet" social gathering to welcome the new Superintendent.

"Returning to Coronado Unified is an exciting professional opportunity," said Karl. "To once again work alongside an amazingly dedicated faculty while reconnecting with a community that values the promise and potential of each child is a dream come true."

Karl Mueller was raised in San Diego County and has been an educator in California since 1997 as a math and history teacher, Court and Community School teacher, Special Education Resource teacher, director of a Charter School, and as an administrator for comprehensive public high school students. Karl graduated from Sonoma State University with a BA in History and earned his Masters Degree in Education from Point Loma Nazarene. Karl is married to his wife, Lia, and enjoys exploring the world with his two sons, William and Finnegan.

Karl proudly served the staff and students of Coronado High School (CHS) as principal and ROP/CTE director for eight years. At CHS, Karl was passionate about creating opportunities for his students to identify and select, with purpose, placements for '13th Grade' or other academic opportunities. He developed CTE Pathway courses, matriculated courses with local community colleges, and forged a 'guaranteed admission' compact with San Diego State University. He was also instrumental in expanding post-secondary opportunities for students through the Coronado Pathways Charter School.

Mr. Mueller began serving as principal at Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) in the San Dieguito Union High School District in 2013. During his tenure at CCA, Karl supported a growing enrollment (from 1750 to 2500 students), facilitated engaging professional development experiences for staff in both CCSS and NGSS, developed a 'Raven Wellness' program and curricula that focuses on the health and balance of all members of the CCA community, and established meaningful relationships with staff, parents, and students.

Claudia Gallant Honored with State Seal of Biliteracy Award

Claudia Gallant was honored at the San Diego County Office of Education's 18th Annual Leadership in Biliteracy Symposium last night for her contributions in supporting biliteracy and specifically for her work in implementing the State Seal of Biliteracy in our District. Nominated by Coronado High School Spanish teacher, Maria Gutierrez, Mrs. Gallant was honored with other proponents of biliteracy throughout San Diego County.

Approved by the CUSD Governing Board last year, the State Seal of Biliteracy is an honor recognizing graduating seniors who meet criteria in speaking, reading, and writing one of more languages in addition to English. Both native English speakers who show mastery in English and a foreign language, as well as students whose native language is other than English who master both languages, can qualify for this honor.

This will be the first year Coronado High School has awarded this honor with approximately forty graduating seniors qualifying this inaugural year. Mrs. Gallant has been passionate about implementing this type of program in Coronado for several years, working closely with CUSD's secondary foreign language teachers. As a life-long Spanish language learner and former Spanish teacher herself, Mrs. Gallant feels strongly that biliteracy is an essential skill, especially in today's global environment.

"Being biliterate is the most important 21st century skill," said Mrs. Gallant. "It equates to employment opportunities. What's more important than being able to communicate with more people in this world and in their native language? It opens doors and bridges divides. I am proud that our schools recognize English learners when they become English proficient with special ceremonies. Learning rigorous content in a language other than one's own is very challenging. With the addition of the State Seal of Biliteracy, this will hopefully encourage more students to pursue a foreign language as well."
