Silver Strand Principal Bill Cass
to Retire at the End of the School Year

Longtime Coronado resident and CUSD employee Bill Cass will retire at the end of this school year. After over 30 years of serving Coronado students, Mr. Cass told his faculty and staff Wednesday afternoon the news that he would be leaving Silver Strand Elementary at the end of June. The news was heartbreaking to most since Mr. Cass is beloved by not only the staff, but also by parents and students. Mr. Cass has served as principal at Silver Strand since 2007 and was previously a teacher and assistant principal at Village Elementary as well as a basketball coach for the high school.

Under the leadership of Mr. Cass, Silver Strand has become San Diego County's highest performing elementary school of similar military-impacted schools for the last several years, achieving an Academic Performance Index of over 900. His first priority has always been to ensure students feel safe, secure, and supported, believing intensely that academic achievement is only possible when students feel this way.

During the last nine years, Mr. Cass has constructed a support structure for all Silver Strand students and their families, whether they are military-connected or not. The list of services and supports embedded into the Silver Strand culture includes: Operation BIGS and Operation PALS, Operation Hero, FOCUS, Military Family Life Counselors, Fleet and Family Support, and Child and Youth Programs Youth Center.

Popular Annual Event on Thursday Night at CHS

Empty Bowls Raising Money to Feed the Needy at Food Insecure in San Diego

Coronado High School ceramics students have been making over a thousand bowls for the past two months for the annual fundraiser, Empty Bowls. The Empty Bowls mission is to raise money to feed and support the Food Insecure in San Diego. This event takes place on Thursday April 14th at Coronado High School. The organizations involved this year are; Kitchens for Good, Feeding America San Diego, Project Sammich, and Beth Israel of San Diego Hunger Project.

At the event $20 buys a handmade bowl filled with soup, from local participating restaurants. The event draws hundreds of Coronado locals every year! Last year this non-profit event made over $32,000 and since 2007 Empty Bowls has provided over a half a million meals in San Diego. The ceramics department looks forward to seeing everyone on Thursday April 14th from 5-7pm at Coronado High School.

Chromebooks and CloudReady Transform Learning in Coronado Classrooms

Chrome devices have taken the educational world, and CUSD, to new heights by providing fast and easy to use online devices to students. Approximately five years ago, the CUSD Technology Department made a decision to move to Haiku and Google Docs, placing student learning in an online environment that could be accessed on almost any device. This supports the district goal of anytime, anywhere learning for students.

There is even more exciting news...CloudReady is coming to Coronado schools. Read next month's newsletter for more information of how the CUSD IT Department is hoping to save approximately $70,000 in replacement costs using this new tool!
