Superintendent Felix Announces His Retirement on July 1st

After working for 30 years in education, Dr. Jeff Felix, superintendent, announced his retirement during Thursday night's school board meeting. The 2015-16 school year will be Felix's last as he will officially step down in June. Click here for the text of his official announcement.

"Serving the Coronado Unified School District has been an absolute blessing," Felix said.

Though he will no longer be a part of the district, the 62-year-old said he wasn't giving up education for good. Felix plans to consult in the educational technology side of the business as well as help coach struggling superintendents.   Click here for his official bio.

Felix first began working for the district in 2008, taking over for Dr. Sue Coyle. Before heading for Coronado, he also served as Superintendent for the Bonsall Union School District, San Pasqual Union School District, and Light & Life Christian School in Escondido.

Board President Dawn Ovrom saluted Felix for his service to Coronado.

"It goes without saying how much the board has appreciated your time and services with the district," Ovrom said.

Ovrom also thanked Felix for giving ample notice, adding the district will work hard to find another superintendent that will be able to fill the position by July.
Coronado Middle School Gets Surprise Announcement
CMS Principal Jay Marquand to Leave the District for New Position in Sweetwater UHSD

After 14 years in the district, Dr. Jay Marquand will be leaving for another opportunity to serve students in the Sweetwater Union High School District. Marquand has been selected as the Director of Alternative Programs and will start his new job January 1st.

"While I am sad to leave my friends and colleagues in Coronado, I know that I will leave the district and the middle school with great pride for what has been accomplished, said Marquand. "Alternative learning has always been a strong passion of mine and I am excited for this next chapter in my professional career."

"I'm indebted to so many incredible students, staff, parents and community members who have made my experience in Coronado a lifelong memory. I will cherish those memories and reflect fondly upon them as I move forward in both my professional career and my personal life."

Superintendent Jeff Felix has named CMS Assistant Principal Karin Mellina as the interim principal until further notice. Felix plans to consult with the CMS faculty and staff to determine their wishes.

"I fully expect to name Karin as the permanent replacement for Dr. Marquand," said Felix. "It is important for me to talk with the staff and have this decision be a collaborative one."
