School District Signs Tentative Agreement with Classified Employees
After months of discussion, a tentative agreement for a two-year contract was reached Tuesday morning by CUSD and the California School Employees Association. This agreement achieves the main goal desired of both sides- a pay raise that recognizes the remarkable work classified staff perform daily. Every year, the U.S. President, U.S. Senate, state governors, and officials around the world proclaim the third week in October CHARACTER COUNTS! Week. In our Coronado Unified schools, we celebrate right along with the rest of the country, but it doesn't stop there. Character education is a huge part of not only what we do daily, but who we are as a community and what we represent as an organization.

"Be Nice On Your Device" Theme Helps VES Students at Digital Citizenship Week
Village Elementary celebrated its inaugural Digital Citizenship Week October 19 - 23, 2015. With the theme of "Be Nice On Your Device," students in grades TK - 5 explored ways to be responsible digital users in the 21st century. Students participated in various activities, including a "digital footprint" lesson which included classroom discussions and a footprint graphic displaying students' pledges and art work.

Vision to Transform Learning
Four CUSD educators recently attended the NWEA MAP Fusion Conference in Portland, Oregon. MAP, or Measures of Academic Progress, is the computer-adaptive assessment used by CUSD students in grades 2-9 to provide immediate feedback to teachers and the students themselves on their level of skills and knowledge in English language arts and mathematics. The team attended many sessions on the topic of personalized learning plans and using data to make a difference in classrooms, grade levels and departments, and schools. Conference speakers included Ron Clark who started the Ron Clark Academy, a model school with a vision to transform classrooms around the world inspired CUSD attendees. Students take the MAP assessment three times a year, and the data is immediately available. Teachers conference with students to set goals for future learning needs, recognize strengths, and share information with parents.

Last Chance to See Bat Boy the Musical!
What is a play about a bat without some blood? There are plenty of ghoulish moments, but no worries - the "blood" is actually made of chocolate syrup or theatrical blood! Boasting 36 students, this is the largest cast that the CoSA Musical Theater Department has ever managed for a musical. Click here for more on this story.
