State Test Results Delayed to Next Week

New Teaching Approach Connects Learning to Life
Coronado Unified School District students are on the path to Connecting Learning to Life! Over the past several years, most states (including CA) have worked with educators, business leaders, and colleges to define the skills needed for students to graduate college and be career-ready. This new approach to learning has shifted Coronado's focus to teaching these higher level skills and regularly checking progress to ensure our students are moving masterfully toward their learning goals. Now, with a new and better test, we will have the information we need to adjust teaching and improve learning, increasing each student's opportunity to succeed.

STAR testing is gone and the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) has taken its place. These new tests which students took for the first time a few months ago, are engaging, interactive, and uniquely accessible with questions that require high level thinking, look like real life problems, and are similar to classroom work. Most important, it provides information that informs the actions your teachers take each and every day in the classroom.

As of this writing, the California Department of Education (CDE) will tentatively release statewide all student performance data that is part of the CAASPP system next Wednesday, September 9, at 11:00 AM. Our Coronado data along with state, county, and other district & school baseline data results will be available. The results and supporting information will be available to you in several ways:
  • A public website will be available at http://caaspp.cde.ca.gov
  • Individual Student Reports will be mailed home to parents and guardians. At this writing, CUSD has not yet received these reports; they are expected to arrive sometime in September and will be mailed from the District Office. Individual student reports are not a part of the public website.
  • Online Parent Guides with comprehensive guidance by grade and subject are available (grades 3-5, grades 6-8, grade 11). These guides will have sample questions, sample items, and other examples. Parent Guides will be posted at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/index.asp under the Parents tab.
  • CUSD will hold parent information opportunities in the month of October for parents to learn about the new assessment and the new reporting features. Dates for these events are to be decided based upon the pending release dates from the state.
Preliminary CAASPP data for Coronado Unified School District has been received by CUSD administration. The long, difficult process of analyzing this data has begun with staff, however until the statewide release, this information is embargoed. Opportunities for the community to understand these new baseline test results will be available at the Governing Board workshop on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 4:00 PM. We also have several parent opportunities (pending) planned for October, as well as at each Governing Board meeting this fall as a part of each school principal's presentation.

As reported in the August Learning Department Report prepared by Senior Director Claudia Gallant, these new CAASPP tests, like the new learning goals they were designed to measure, are very different from the previous CST exams. Educators and parents are strongly encouraged to NOT make any comparisons between old scores and new. This year's scores are a starting point- a baseline for the progress CUSD expects students to make over a period of time.

Masquerade on Bourbon Street Event at Hotel Del October 24

ParkLife Realty and Bob Stall Chevrolet Step Up Big Time to Help Coronado Unified Schools via Foundation
Spreckels Park was rocking last Sunday when ParkLife Real Estate in conjunction with the Coronado Schools Foundation (CSF) underwrote "The Tribute to Journey" band.

"Our schools are the heart of our community and Renee Wilson and I along with our team of realtors enjoyed welcoming community members, families, teachers and staff," said Scott Grimes. "Park Life is always happy to support our local schools through the Foundation."

Thanks to the generosity of Bob Stall Chevrolet, you'll have several chances to see the 2015 Chevy Spark that one lucky winner will call their own after the October 24th Masquerade on Bourbon Street Benefit Auction at the Hotel Del Coronado. Tickets are now on sale and will culminate with the Benefit Auction.

"We are so appreciative of our Auction Co-Chairs Abby Buckley and Condra Mullins for making this amazing donation possible thanks to the generosity of Bob Stall Chevrolet.  Only 1,000 tickets will be sold with tickets at one for $60 and two for $100, with great odds to win!  We are so very grateful of this very generous donation; to my knowledge it's the first time it has ever happened in the 33-year history of the Foundation," commented Patty Cowan, Chief Executive Officer. "And, if you buy two tickets by October 1st, you get one additional ticket free! "
