Teachers and Classified Staff Honored at Retirement Celebration

Nine employees retiring from the Coronado Unified School District were honored at the school district's 2015 Retirement Celebration on Wednesday afternoon in the District's Board Room.  Dawn Ovrom, Governing Board President, and Rita Beyers, Senior Director, HR, hosted the event.  Also speaking to retirees and their guests were Dr. Jeff Felix, Superintendent, Tamara O'Brien, President of ACT, and Dianne Bechtel, CSEA Representative.  The event was catered by Lil Piggy's Bar-B-Q.

All retirees were given a brass engraved school bell. Teachers were also given a bathrobe from ACT. Pictured above are Wendy Santamaria, Gail Massey, and Rebecca Black.

The nine retiring employees recognized at the ceremony were:

  • Pamela Barton, Teacher of 18 Years currently at Village
  • Rebecca Black, Teacher of 35 Years at CHS
  • Vangie Gour, Instructional Health Care Assistant of 15 Years currently at Silver Strand
  • Kenneth Ireland, NJROTC Senior Instruction of 5 years at CHS

Silver Strand Elementary School celebrated their 50th anniversary today.  Principal Bill Cass hosted the ceremony, which featured over 400 participants.  A record amount of funds was donated by the Strand PTO and a time capsule was buried with the intent that it is to remain buried until the 100th anniversary celebration in 2065.  Mr. Cass made no promises to attend that event...

Crown Preschool Students Enjoy Active Learning Methods

Recently Crown Preschool students in Ms. Lindsay, Ms. Brenna, and Ms. Jocylinn's class practiced counting skills while they counted American flags and matched the number to the correct amount of flags.  Some other skills they worked on were cutting, patterning, and writing while they learned that the American Flag has stripes and stars with red, white, and blue colors.  They made an American wreath, an American art collage, and an American flag made out of unique materials and another made out of blueberries, raspberries, and marshmallows.

A fun song they learned was "You're a Grand Old Flag".  Click here for a link to the song.

Crown Preschool still has a few openings left for their 3 year old class beginning in the fall.  Call Preschool Director Kathy Mathis now to reserve your spot at
