Silver Strand Elementary
To Celebrate 50th Anniversary All Next Week

What happens when you have a school of a certain age and you mix in a dedicated faculty willing to use a series of projects as teachable moments? The result is the 50th Anniversary celebration of the founding of Silver Strand Elementary School, which will be held Friday, June 5, 2015. The celebration will start at 8:15 a.m. with the school's traditional flagpole celebration.

Principal Bill Cass explained the genesis of the celebration. "A gentleman called the school and asked to talk to me. He said, 'Just to let you know, the school is turning 50 years old and I was in the first class.' I wasn't sure if that was accurate, so I checked with Bruce Linder from the Coronado Historical Association and he said it was true. So we began plans to celebrate our 50th Anniversary."

A committee was formed, which had the total support of the Silver Strand faculty. "We have such a small staff that I asked for anybody interested to come to a preliminary planning meeting," Cass noted. "All of our teachers came. We brainstormed ways to celebrate and we came up with something for each grade level to do in the form of a special project connected to the 50th Anniversary. Our goal was to have the various elements of the celebration be educational, reflective of the changes over time and into the future, and we want it to be fun. That's why we are having the celebration at the end of the school year."

Students Honor Fallen Heroes via Art and Writing

In honor of Memorial Day, the Naval Base Coronado School Liaison Officer (SLO) and the Naval Base Coronado Gold Star Coordinator (INGSC) invited local students to participate in a Memorial Day Essay and Drawing Contest. Students were asked to either draw or write an essay describing what "Memorial Day Means to Me." Participants included students from CMS, Village, Silver Strand, and Silver Strand Youth Center.

Several essays and drawings were selected for display throughout the Installation. Drawings contained images of the American flag honorably placed next to crosses and markers as well as children and Service Members joyfully waving the flag. The introspective essays challenged the students to reflect on the origins of Memorial Day and how it has evolved over the years. Katie Campion, a seventh grader from Coronado Middle School, stated though she has no one in her family serving in the military, she takes the day to, "be thankful for all that protect us from harm. Memorial Day is not just a day to remember the past; it also reminds us that there are still people giving their lives to keep us safe."

Ethan Meyer, a 3rd grade military child from Silver Strand Elementary, described what Memorial Day meant to him, "It's when the families of our Fallen Heroes come together to give each other hope and love... It's a day to comfort others and ourselves. What other holiday does that?"

Shane Schmeichel Successful with Competitive Application

Grant Funds New Classes in Clean Energy Engineering and Gaming Software Programming

Shane Schmeichel, CHS assistant principal, announced this week that a few San Diego County schools have been awarded a $13.1 million Career Pathways Trust Grant, and CHS is one of them! Mr. Schmeichel has been working collaboratively for months with a few other districts to build and then submit this huge statewide competitive grant. This grant will allow CHS to create pathways for software design for gaming and clean energy engineering solutions.

Funds will be allocated on a per-pupil percentage using year 1 and year 2 projected enrollments submitted by our district during the grant writing process. The estimated amount of funding our district may expect to receive based on these calculations will be approximately $32,130, which will fund two classes.
