Ledyard Hakes Resigns from CUSD Governing Board

Board Member Ledyard Hakes has announced his resignation from the Coronado Unified School District Governing Board effective June 30, 2015. Mr. Hakes first joined the school board in 2010 and was reelected in 2014.

At the regular school board meeting on May 21, 2015, the Board will determine the method of filling the vacancy created by Mr. Hakes' resignation.  The Board may choose to fill the vacancy either by appointment or calling for a special election.  The Board will also decide on the process and procedures for the appointment or special election.  A special election usually has a significant cost and school districts normally use the appointment method for replacing school board members.

He is best known for his active role in children's health and school safety.  After studying the District's counseling services, Mr. Hakes found that students required more support for their mental health needs.  He knew that there exists a strong relationship between District counseling and the community's safety and security.  He successfully secured an agreement with the City of Coronado and the District to form a Joint Powers Authority to fund counselors to serve the social and emotional needs of all students.

Mr. Hakes also worked tirelessly on creating safer paths of travel and more fluid drop-off zones at both Village Elementary and the Early Childhood and Development Center (ECDC).  The street and landscape improvements at the ECDC in 2013 are the direct result of Mr. Hakes' influence and direction.

Mr. Hakes' term of office ends in 2018.  If the Board appoints another community member to fill that term, the appointment will end in December 2016.  During the regular election that will take place in November 2016, candidates will run for the remaining two years of the term.  Then in 2018, the member seat will be up for reelection for the full four years.

Village & Strand Fifth Grade Students Sharpen their "Soft Skills" at Interview Day Sponsored by Junior Achievement's BizTown

Last Wednesday morning, fifth grade students from both Village and Strand Elementary came "dressed for success" during their annual Interview Day.  They arrived in their best attire and diligently interviewed for jobs such as mayor, reporter, project manager, and CEO. Over thirty leaders from school, military, and community organizations, along with local entrepreneurs interviewed the enthusiastic students.

Fifth graders gained real-world interview experience, thanks to a financial literacy program from Junior Achievement called BizTown. Students have learned how to write checks, make deposits, pay taxes, and work with each other in "business teams." Their efforts will culminate in a trip to JA BizTown Mission Valley at the end of May, where they will demonstrate the skills they have learned.

Police Chief and Superintendent Urge Parents to Celebrate Safely & Responsibly During End of the Year Activities

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Graduation for our Coronado High School seniors is rapidly approaching. Unfortunately this time of joy and celebration may result in tragedy and heartbreak for some in our city. In recent years we have seen the tragic deaths and serious injuries of several San Diego County teenagers. These tragic motor vehicle accidents were a direct result of young people consuming alcohol. In some cases alcohol was provided to the children by adults who assumed they could do so in a "safe" environment.

As Police Chief and as school district Superintendent, we would like to stress that there are no "safe" or legal ways to allow anyone under the age of 21 to consume alcohol. California law prohibits giving alcohol to minors and allows jail time for parents who provide alcohol to a minor who was subsequently involved in a car accident.  Additionally, parents could face civil suits related to these types of preventable incidents.  We joined together to bring this message to your attention in an effort to ensure our children celebrate graduation and safely enjoy the summer.

Please read the two links carefully so that you are fully aware of not only the law, but the severe consequences that you and your child could suffer as a result of alcohol consumption. We wish you a safe and happy end of the school year and summer.
