Mobile Technology Learning Conference at USD

School District Leaders are Featured Speakers to County Educators at USD Future Ready Symposium

Two teams of educators from Coronado have been asked to speak at a countywide symposium on new instructional practices and how those practices are transforming learning.  CUSD Superintendent Jeff Felix, Senior Learning Director Claudia Gallant, and Technology Coordinator Ramona Loiselle will be the keynote speakers for the day-long event at the University of San Diego (USD) on Saturday, May 9.  They will be speaking on the extensive experiences Coronado schools have had with students using computers in a 1:1 setting and how the practice of allowing students to use their own device (BYOD) has benefited both the school and the student.

This same team addressed the National Educational Broadband Service Association at its annual conference on the same subject earlier this year.

The second Coronado team will be CMS Principal Jay Marquand, Melody Jensen, and Kristen Lively, both CMS Science teachers.  Their presentation will be telling other educators how the CMS Science teachers aligned to the new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) using locally created curriculum along with free Open Educational Resources.  The teachers aligned science instruction in grades 6-8 to NGSS even before the state or the local school board adopted the new standards.  Aligning the standards meant creating a brand new curriculum and resource materials without any funding.

The purpose of the Future Ready Symposium is to allow innovative educators to showcase how they are effectively using technology to transform instructional practices and student learning experiences. Other topics in the symposium will include Project Based Learning, Differentiated/Personalized Learning, Transforming Learning Environments, STEM, and Developing Digital Content and Assessments.  The cost is free to any educator.  To register for the event, go to http://futurereadysd.splashthat.com/

The Mobile Technology Learning Center (MTLC), established in 2011 by a grant from Dr. Irwin and Joan Jacobs, is a university-based research center that fuels innovation in K-12 education. Under the auspices of the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego, MTLC collaborates with school districts to effectively integrate technology into today's digital learning environments.  This team of experts uses a comprehensive approach to identify best practices, build capacity and improve student outcomes through research and evaluation, strategic direction and professional learning.

CHS Tops the County Graduation Rate

WASC Accreditation Bestowed upon Coronado High for Maximum 6 Years

The Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC) has announced Coronado High School meets the ACS WASC criteria for accreditation. This accreditation status is based on all of the information provided by the school, including the self-study report, and the satisfactory completion of the on-site accreditation visit. The Commission has granted the school a Six-Year Accreditation Status.

This news comes on the heels of some additional great news!  The California Cohort Graduation Rate has been released for 13-14 and CHS came out on top of the county with a 99.3%!  This is several tenths higher than in previous years.  The data in the chart combines Palm Academy with CHS to form a district 98.3% rate, which is still the highest in the county by far.  Congratulations to Principal Jenny Moore and her team for this accomplishment!
