CMS Teacher Lisa Knepper Selected to Receive the 2015 Greater San Diego
Reading Association Literacy Award

Lisa Knepper is affectionately known as the Grammar Queen and Writing Guru teacher at CMS, and now she has the award to prove it!  Lisa was recently selected to receive the Greater San Diego Reading Association (GSDRA) Literacy Award for 2015.   She will be the guest of the association and will be presented with a framed award at the annual "Celebration of Literacy Stars" event on April 25.  Lisa was chosen from nominations submitted by CUSD administrators.

Each year CUSD participates in this unique award provided by the GSDRA, an affiliate of the California Reading Association and Honor Council of the International Literacy Association. GSDRA annually celebrates the endeavors of educators and community members who have made significant contributions in the areas of reading and language arts.  Each district may select one individual who meets the criteria of excellence in teaching and promoting literacy; each year one team of educators from the county may also be recognized.

For the last 21 years, Lisa has worn many hats in supporting literacy for Coronado Middle School students. Her passion and talents in the field of English Language Arts make her undeniably a leader on campus.  Her expertise specifically stands in the areas of 21st century learning, incorporating critical thinking into lessons, support for students needing literacy support including English learners, and ensuring students are proficient communicators.

All of Lisa's students receive expertly designed and seamlessly delivered technology-based instruction, in which every student uses a device in class and at home via the Haiku learning management system. As the Humanities Department Chair, she sets an example for others by her continued Common Core professional learning, highly effective Common Core State Standards (CCSS) lessons, and by her work ethic, positive attitude, demeanor, and poise. Most importantly, Lisa is a believer in all children.

Quick Guides to Understanding the New Accountability Plans for Schools

Take a deeper look at each of the eight state priority areas of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) in the California PTA's LCAP Quick Guides.  These helpful guides assist parents to better understand and engage in the new Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs). These latest resources show how progress is measured, key questions to ask and links to more resources. Use these great tools as you review our School District's LCAP.

Parents engaging in the conversation around our District's LCAP is crucial to our planning process.  Parent involvement means efforts by the school district and schools to seek input from all parents, and to engage parents as partners in decision making. It also means promoting parent participation in programs that meet the needs of both their own students and others on campus. With authentic parent involvement, families, schools and communities work closely together to build a strong framework for student achievement.

Crown Preschool Students Learn Symmetry as Butterflies Take Center Stage

Students had such a fun week exploring bugs all around us!  We went on a scavenger hunt where we found beetles, bees, flies, spiders, ants, butterflies, ladybugs, and many more bugs and insects.

The children learned about butterflies all week long and found out that butterfly wings look the same on one side as they do on the other. This is called symmetry. We made symmetrical butterflies by painting one side of their wings, then folding them to transfer to the other side. It was like magic watching the paint go from one wing to the other, and very exciting to watch.

The wiggles were forgotten by singing and dancing on Thursday. One of our favorite videos is from our "100's Week" a few months back, and we are still requesting it! It's called "Count to 100" and here is the video link if you would like to try it at home.

We finished the week with Free Flow Friday where we made butterfly collages, painted on the easel, and finger painted with shaving cream. Painting on the tables with shaving cream was a fun sensory activity that felt messy, but was actually very easy to clean. If you ever want to try it at home, just squeeze a dollop of shaving cream on the table and let your children dig in! It comes off easily with water and doesn't stain.  Our theme next week will be Garden.
