On Applebee Pond Life Skills Puppet Program

Coronado SAFE Credited with Preventing Attempted Kidnapping

Last week's attempted kidnapping at Fifth and C may have been thwarted by utilizing lessons learned at Village Elementary School.  A child who attended the school last year used techniques demonstrated by Coronado SAFE's On Applebee Pond Life Skills Puppet Program to get away from a man who told her to "get in his van."  The girl screamed and ran home.

The popular program has been enjoyed by students at Village and Strand Elementary for many years.

Through the visual power of puppetry, thousands of local children have been taught through this award-winning, scientific-based life skills program. Designed by the Mercer County Behavioral Health Commission of Pennsylvania, On Applebee Pond is a creative prevention tool and cross-age teaching mechanism that aids children in developing positive life skills, thereby decreasing their risk of making unhealthy life choices.

This program focuses on five prevention themes: Social Skills, Safety Skills, Self-Esteem, Conflict Resolution, and Age-Appropriate Awareness of Chemicals.

Some of these lessons include:

  • How to identify adults you can trust
  • How to identify harmful substances in an environment
  • Protecting yourself from strangers
  • Learning to listen, understand and trust our feelings
  • Exploring reasons why each person's unique

On Applebee Pond Puppet Show is available through 7 different schools in Coronado and is proudly sponsored by The Optimist Club of Coronado.

Drought Will Affect Landscape Conditions at All Schools

Coronado Unified Staff and Students Told to Limit Water Use

Governor Brown recently issued an executive order that includes a mandatory 25 percent water usage reduction. Harrold Wigg, Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation stated that the District has previously tried to conserve water by monitoring water use and implementing numerous measures to reduce water use and prevent waste like:

  • The replacement of landscaping with drought tolerant plantings at ECDC, Village, and the District Office
  • The installation of artificial turf at the High School and Village Elementary
  • The replacement of irrigation timers with smart irrigation controllers at Middle School, ECDC, District Office and High School

While these were steps in the right direction, the District will need to cut even further during this difficult time. In order to comply with the intent and spirit of the Governor's order, it has been decided to cease the watering of the exterior (outside of gates) lawns at our sites and reduce the interior watering times.

All staff and students are being asked to think of more ways to conserve. Click here for the link to the state's water agency for all to study and share.
