Police, Fire, and Medical Partners Reach Out to Help

Coronado Middle School Hosts SAFE Sponsored Drugstore Program for all 6th Grade Students in Community

As part of their character development series, an exceptional learning opportunity was hosted by CMS this week for all district and private school 6th grade students.  For the past 13 years, CMS has been proud to host the Drugstore program made possible from the support of the Coronado Student and Family Enrichment coalition (SAFE), the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), and other parents and former students who volunteer countless hours to bring this teachable moment to students.

The
Drugstore program is a dramatic presentation of eight educational scenarios, demonstrations and lectures and targets middle school aged students with the goal of raising their awareness of making healthy lifestyle choices, particularly when it comes to drug and alcohol abuse, their consequences, and prevention of future involvement in substance usage or abuse.

Students hear from various professional agencies including: law enforcement, the medical/mental health community outreach programs, our own Coronado Police and Fire Departments, the Coronado SAFE coalition, and other professionals in the field, many who are community members.  The Drugstore illustrates a clear and concise enactment of the negative consequences of drug and alcohol use or abuse. The goal of the event is to have our children critically think about making positive, healthy lifestyle choices.

Village Elementary School Character Education

GREAT Program from CPD Assists Students with Bullying Strategy

For the past six weeks the 4th graders at Village Elementary have had the opportunity to participate in the G.R.E.A.T (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program.  Officer Manello and Officer Hamilton came in to the classrooms for 6 weeks to teach lessons on what is bullying and how to react to it, communication skills, strategies for reacting to anger issues, group differences, and how to be a G.R.E.A.T citizen.

Students were engaged throughout each lesson by role playing many different scenarios.  "My class was bummed the one week we had to reschedule G.R.E.A.T.  They really enjoy Officer Manello coming in each week", explained fourth grade teacher, Kathy Shady.

Students Enjoy Circular Object Day aka Pi Day on 3.14.15

Coronado Middle School Students had a blast measuring, calculating, graphing, comparing, and analyzing their circular objects.  The students worked in teams, had in depth, conceptually-based conversations, and were able to explain their thinking and learning.

Assistant Principal Karin Mellina thanked the entire district secondary math team for their dedication to students and their passion for providing our kids with a rigorous, Common Core standards-based program.

"It has been an honor to be a part of the team this year," said Ms. Mellina.  "The work they have done and continue to do is to be commended.  I'm so proud of each and every one of them, and I'm very excited to continue our work together."

Jack Cribari was named Principal of the Day recently at Village Elementary.  Principal Cribari kept the office informed of his "schedule" all day in case they needed him!
