Student Produced Event Reaches Thousands Worldwide

Coronado Schools Foundation Sets a New Record
for Community Giving at 2015 Telethon

The 27th Coronado Schools Foundation Telethon on March 12, produced by students to benefit students, truly had a carnival-like atmosphere in the Quad while shining stars from every school performed on stage in the Coronado High School Performing Arts Center.

"By the time the phone bank closed at 9 pm, our tally was over $188,000 and as of today, we are within $2,000 of our $200,000 goal," noted Patty Cowan, CSF Chief Executive Officer.  "From donations of $25 to $2500, every donation gets us closer to our goal and will directly benefit our schools for the 2015-16 school year."

"Let's face it- the Telethon is a ton of hard work," said Dr. Jeff Felix, CUSD Superintendent.  "But when I see students doing a huge percentage of the production, I know it is one of the most valuable experiences our school district and CSF can offer.  When you can raise money AND provide an opportunity for students to learn at the same time, you have an enormous win-win for everyone."

Under the direction of Amy Steward and Technical Producer Tony Perri, student groups from the Coronado Middle School KCMS News Team and the CHS CTV News Team produced, directed, and taped the show, including the popular Local's Card commercials.  Every grade level from Village Elementary performed and the Coronado Middle School staff rocked the stage!

From Lifetime Partner David Adams and Martial Arts America to Hotel del Coronado, Mullins Orthodontics, Sullivan's Solar Power and Willis Allen Real Estate - we so appreciate the support of our local business community.  Generous partners included La Mer, Clayton's Coffee Shop and Mexican Take Out, CMG Mortgage, Chicago Title, eCoronado.com, Nicolls Design, Spiro's Gyros, and newcomers Glorietta Bay Inn and Emerald C Gallery.   Kari Lyons, Park Life Realty and former CUSD teacher and CSF board member, was honored as the Merchant of the Year.

Lucky winners of the Emerald City surfboard and Holland's bike were The Francisco Valades Family and Ms. Laurie Drenning, respectively. The Quad raffle was a big success as was the Food Court hosted by CHS Senior Class and Candela's/Tent City.

A special shout out to the many superstar volunteers; from NJROTC Cadets and National Honor Society volunteers in the Telethon Tent City Quad to CUSD Board Members and staff who volunteered. The event brought students, neighbors, and families together to watch, play, and donate!

"Our goal was participation and boy did our community shine!" said Michelle Gilmore, CSF Director of Development.  "We congratulate Silver Strand for winning the competition for the most STARS (donations) by percentage with 24% of families participating. Village Elementary and students at ECDC were in a very close second, followed by CMS and CHS."  On April 7,  Silver Strand Elementary School students will enjoy an all-school ice cream party from our friends at MooTime Creamery.

Freedom from Stress, Kindness for All are Goals

Mindful Moments Become Popular at CHS for Staff & Students

Two weeks ago, a team of students, teachers, counselors, and administrators from CHS attended the Mindfulness and Youth Conference here in San Diego, with an interest in learning more about the role of mindfulness practices in preventing and managing stress, anxiety, and depression in youth.  Our team returned to campus energized and excited about ways to introduce and implement exercises that promote self-awareness, focus on the present, resilience, relaxation amidst stress, and kindness and compassion towards self and others.

We are inviting our students to join staff in an optional "mindful moment" each Wednesday before school at 8:15 in the MPR to take some deep breaths and refocus before starting the day. This past Wednesday, we filled a classroom with Islanders who, after participating, shared that they felt "more in the present," "more able to focus," and "free from stress."  CHS students and staff will continue to look for ways to implement mindfulness practices around the school day to promote healthy life balance in our school community.  For more information on mindfulness and local resources, please see:

CMS Student Receives Special Honor as Youngest Student Ever Published in Naval History Journal

CMS 6th grade student, Mercy Tangredi, was given a very special honor recently by having her research based story published in a national scholastic journal.  The Naval History journal, sponsored by the U.S. Naval Institute, published Mercy's story titled, Ships of Honor, for their forthcoming April 2015 edition, Volume 29, Number 2, or www.usni.org.

Mercy is the youngest author ever to be published in the Naval History journal!  The story is a tribute to the valor of Navy chaplains who displayed great heroism and were commemorated in ships' names.

Mercy has a strong connection with the story and was inspired by her mother who was a Naval chaplain.  CMS is very proud of Mercy and her tremendous contributions to our school community.

CPD Captain Lawton Spends Special Afternoon at Silver Strand's "Operation Bigs"

Operation Bigs is an after school mentoring program for military students that was started a number of years ago at Silver Strand in partnership with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of San Diego County.  Adult volunteers ("Bigs") meet with students they've been paired with ("Littles") once a week on Wednesday afternoons and do things together like board games, playing sports outside, arts and crafts, and homework.

As a special treat this past Wednesday, Captain Mike Lawton of the Coronado Police Department and a "Big" volunteer, arranged for staff from the Police Department, Fire Department, City Lifeguards, and State Beach Lifeguards to bring their emergency vehicles for students to visit.  An invitation was extended to all upper grade students whose dismissal coincided with the arrival of the vehicles, as well as kids in the Navy Rec and CUSD Child Care programs, to also take part.  Everyone had a great time climbing on and in the vehicles, talking with personnel about their jobs, and interacting together.
