Individualized Education for All Children Becomes Primary Objective

School Board Adopts New Goals for the Next Five Years;
Personalized Learning, Communication, and Safe Schools Top the List

Last night the Governing Board officially approved three new District goals to go into effect for the 2015-16 school year.  All schools will align their site strategic plans with these new Board Goals.  These new goals ensure that the needs of all students are met through personalized learning, safe and supportive schools, and engaged shareholders.

15-16 Governing
Board Goals
  1. Integrate personalized learning with assessment methods that will prepare all students for academic and vocational success.
  2. Communicate openly, freely, and accurately to engage and involve all shareholders.
  3. Maintain safe and supportive schools where students and staff thrive.

Nearly 50 shareholders of CUSD, including parents, community members, staff, students, and all Governing Board members met last Tuesday, for the District's annual Strategic Planning meeting. The goal for this year's participants was to provide feedback for the Governing Board members to revise the current five Board Goals, which have been in effect since 2010. The participants engaged in several activities that allowed for each member to share his/her vision for all Coronado public schools, and then to work collaboratively to combine and revise ideas, resulting in several key focus areas for the Board to consider in writing new goals for the next five years.

During the afternoon goal-setting session, facilitated by Superintendent Jeff Felix and Senior Director of Learning and Instruction Claudia Gallant, Board members evaluated the shareholder feedback, opinions, and advice. The Board then deliberated for several hours, drafting three new goals aligned to the 8 State Priorities for all public schools.

Sea Perch Grant Funded by Office of Naval Research

Problem Solving Via Teamwork Inspires Students to Work on Innovative Underwater Robotics Program

Fifty students from the Naval Science and Engineering Programs at CHS recently demonstrated their ability to build and control underwater remote operated vehicles (ROVs).  The students are part of the Office of Naval Research's (ONR) Sea Perch program, building their ROVs from kits provided by grants.

Sea Perch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students

with the resources they need to construct an underwater ROV in an in or out-of-school setting. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme.

Coordinating the local Sea Perch program is retired Navy Capt. Kenneth Ireland, the senior naval science instructor for the CHS Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) program. "It's all about getting these kids jazzed-up and excited about science and engineering," Ireland said. "I like to stress a well-rounded learning experience by having each student participate in each aspect of building the ROV."

Nine teams were challenged to operate the ROVs at the CHS pool through timed maneuvering challenges including navigating through a series of underwater obstacles and moving hanging rings from one location to another.

William O'Brien, a Coronado High senior, said that working on the ROVs brought together a strong skill set for his team. "Problem solving, teamwork, and the hands-on experience building these ROVs were all a part of the learning value from this project," he said.

Surfer Yearbook Continues National Award Winning Excellence

CMS yearbook teacher Amy Steward announced that the Surfer Yearbook team has been nominated for the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Pacemaker Award.  The Pacemaker Award recognizes the top yearbooks in the United States.  Last year's 2014 Surfer Yearbook Staff was recognized as the Best in Class Yearbook at the San Diego County Fair, and also garnered a national Colombia Press Scholastic Journalism Crown Award.

Students working on this year's book are looking forward to the outcome of the nomination, but don't have any time to dwell on it as they work to finish the 2015 Surfer Yearbook, which will be released prior to school ending.  Click here to follow the results of the NSPA award

Exclusive Event on Tuesday at the Sundeck Restaurant at the Hotel Del

SOS!  Friends of Nado Nic Mobilize to Help a Terrific Young Man

Friends of Nic Brown will be gathering for a celebration this Tuesday, February 10. The event will be exciting, unique, and exclusive with the expectation of 300 attendees.  There will be presentations and accolades by official and community leaders, national journalists, business owners, military personnel, and celebrities, as well as participation by local entertainers. The event will have the Coronado City Mayor, Police Chief, Fire Chief, high school Principal, and a Union Tribune reporter making presentations and accolades to Nicolas at this event.

Supply Our Students (SOS) will be hosting the First Annual event.  SOS has hired a professional documentary videographer to capture this event in a desire to produce a short-film documentary about Nado Nic, MTM, the First Annual event, as well as the outpouring of community compassion shown in preparation for this event as well as helping Nado Nic.

Nic Brown, or as his friends call him "Nado Nic," was born with Myotubular Myopathy (MTM), a rare but debilitating muscular disease caused by a defect on the MTM1 gene that strikes approximately 40 males at birth in the United States each year. The goal is to help Nado Nic improve his quality of life, reduce his chronic pain, and to increase and sustain his longevity so that he has the opportunity to undergo the clinical trials for which he has already applied.  To accomplish this, Nado Nic requires extensive improvements in his home, transportation, and medical equipment, which requires significant fund-raising efforts.

Nic needs your help for a better life. The community is coming together in an incredible way; don't miss out on the chance to change Nic's life for the better.
