Coronado Middle School Leader Since 2007

Principal Jay Marquand Named Middle Grades Principal of the Year

The Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) announced Tuesday that CMS Principal Jay Marquand has been named the Middle School Principal Administrator of the Year for San Diego and Imperial County (Region 18) for 2015.  The award is given annually by the organization, which is the largest umbrella organization for school leaders in the nation, serving more than 14,500 school leaders.  The award will be presented to Dr. Marquand before hundreds of his peers on the evening of April 24 at the "Honoring Our Own" Awards Dinner at the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel & Resort.

"I am honored to accept this reward on behalf of those who have inspired me throughout my career," said Dr. Marquand when told of his award. "Without the fabulous faculty and staff at CMS and the encouragement from my fellow Coronado administrators, I don't think this award would have happened."

Dr. Marquand was born and raised in San Diego. After being inspired by his own teachers, he knew education was his calling and would be an excellent way to contribute by working with youth for a stronger tomorrow. Upon completion of undergraduate schooling at the University of California in Santa Barbara, he continued to pursue experience and training through graduate and certificated courses of study, including a doctorate of leadership studies at the University of San Diego.

Besides sitting on local boards that support his school, such as the schools foundation, the city police task force to develop student relations, and many others, he also serves as the ACSA Region 18 Middle Schools Council representative. Furthermore, he continues to find ways to bring other school leadership teams and distinguished guests to his school.

Lunch and Learn

Lunch With a Scientist Program Extends to Elementary

This past Monday, January 26, 2015, Silver Strand was proud to present their very first Lunch with a Scientist. This impressive turnout brought 2/3rds of all 4th and 5th graders who volunteered their lunchtime to learn from Dr. Gretchen Deel. Dr. Deel engaged and delighted many students with real medical stories, X-Rays, and wonderful advice for young scientists.  The Lunch with a Scientist program began with a goal of introducing young students to different scientists from a variety of fields who can help them see the connections of science in their everyday lives. Coronado Middle School began the lecture circuit last year with over 13 different scientists volunteering their time to speak to a full classroom of inquisitive students. With the support of Dr. Jay Marquand and Karin Mellina and the enthusiasm of Principal Bill Cass, this collaboration was arranged to bring this program to the elementary school. Kevin Paiz-Ramirez and the entire Middle School Science Department look forward to this continued collaboration with Silver Strand and hope to expand the program to Village Elementary School as well.

Traveling Back in Time

Colonial Day for CUSD Fifth Graders

We traveled back in time today to Colonial America experiencing what life was like in the 1700's.   Students from both Village and Strand Elementary, dressed in Colonial garb, spent the day rotating among nine stations that highlighted life in early America.  A sample of today's

activities included making candles by hand, practicing military drills for the Colonial militia, learning how to treat illnesses with instruction from an apothecary, playing early American games and creating their own lanterns at the tin punch station.  Students also brought a Colonial lunch and enjoyed the homemade bread, butter, and applesauce we made in class.   All of this wouldn't have been possible without the multitude of volunteers.  Parents came dressed for the day too, and did a fabulous job of convincing their children they were early colonists.  Fifth graders were overheard saying, "This is my favorite day of fifth grade!"

Long-running Program Continues to Delight Students and Staff

On Applebee Pond Offered by SAFE to All Elementary Students

SAFE's longest running program, On Applebee Pond continues to serve children at Village, Strand, ECDC, and Crown.  This year for the first time, not only is there a take home activity sheet for the children that corresponds to the lesson, but now parents have an information sheet with suggested questions to promote further exploration of each topic.  Coronado Police Officer Sherri Manello will be part of the personal safety presentations. New school psychologists will take part in the Stress Sessions for 2nd and 3rd grade students.

The first sessions for the preK - 1st grade students begin with basic life skills allowing the children to settle into the program expectations, along with reinforcing Character Education traits. Social Skill skits that use effective and respectful communication through "please and thank you" along with the use of "why?" allow students to better understand social situations.  This was followed by always "going to adults we trust" to help sort out strong feelings.

Self- Esteem topics include how to self regulate strong emotions including discussing how to "hear no" and "say no."  Kids are great at saying no when it is relatively unimportant, but learning to say no in certain situations is an important step to being responsible with adult requests, hopefully matching them with their own values.  Hearing no is just as valuable, as it often means dealing with disappointment and frustration.  The rest of the year deals with: understanding "What we can Change and How we can Change" certain aspects of ourselves, age appropriate "Personal Safety," and more conflict resolution skits.  Each session will contain a practical application that encourages children to cope with any situation and to not become overwhelmed.

The 2nd and 3rd grade students have had Social Skill sessions on "Rumors" and how to effectively deal with them.  "Peer Pressure" was introduced with practiced refusal techniques and "Fear of Failure" was explored through specific personality types.  This month students are investigating the world of "Unfairness" through a prepared script and practical examples.

A question or two about why something is unfair leads to a better understanding of the child's feelings.  In turn, that allows them to get to a place where they can cope with those same feelings.  Remaining scripts will deal with: "Personal Safety, Dealing with Angries in Healthy Ways, and Stress," The "Stress" script allows children to see what stress looks like and simple steps to deal with it.

Both primary and elementary students are learning to identify their own feelings and empathize with the feelings of others, along with how to interact with peers and resolve conflicts while staying safe in a variety of settings.

You've Been Warned...

Midsummer Fever May Cause You to Shake Your Groove Thing

Brace yourselves for this CoSA boogie-fest, a family-friendly version of the 2013 original production from Ion Theatre which, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune, celebrated the 70's decade "in all of its exuberance, excess and gloriously bad taste."

Starting January 30, a pulsing disco beat and white leisure suits will transport Coronado audiences back to the 1970's at "A Midsummer Night's Fever." Together with students from Coronado High School and Pathways Charter School, Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) presents this Shakespeare-inspired disco cabaret show at the Coronado Performing Arts Center, 650 D Avenue, 92118.

Director Kimberly Strassburger says "Interactive theatre is all the rage on the East Coast and it's time for San Diego to dip into the fast-moving fun of this art form." To channel the vibe of the legendary New York dance club Studio 54, audience members are invited to wear plaid and polyester dance duds and to enter the theatre from a Sixth Avenue entrance. "Make it past the bouncer and you'll be seated at club tables around a dance floor and waited on by cast members who are ready to help you 'do the hustle,'" says Strassburger. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and dance moves.

Boogie over to www.cosasandiego.com for tickets, or to the box office 30 minutes before show time. Shows are 8:00 p.m. on  January 30 and February 6, and 6:30 and 9:00 on January 31 and February 7.

Coronado Schools Foundation in High Gear for the New Year

The Monte Carlo Benefit Auction in November, chaired by Tori Heintzelman, netted a record $255,000 for our local public schools.  That's a 27% increase and wouldn't have been possible without the support of our 460 attendees, 200+ donors,  20 business partners and over 100 volunteers who worked on the event.  CSF Event Coordinator Abby Buckley and Director of Development Michelle Gilmore, both CUSD parents, were instrumental in the overall success of the event.  Our thanks to all who made this event a successful venture.

On to the 27th Annual Telethon on March 12th at Coronado High School! Just eight weeks away, our talented students at KCMS and CTV/CHS under the direction of Amy Steward and Tony Perri, are off and running planning the fourth student-produced event.  Mark your calendars for a great night with the live event at the Coronado High Performing Arts Center (5-8:30 pm) and the Quad filled with fun family activities and the Senior Class BBQ from 4-7 pm.

We look forward to welcoming the school and greater community to this fun, family event with something for everyone.  Featuring live student acts with site principals serving as hosts with students from each school site, this "shared-cause" community event will raise much needed funds for our local public schools.  To learn more about what your donations fund or make your donation today, please visit www.csfkids.org.  Stop by the office in the CUSD Office, 201 Sixth Street, or call us at 437-8059.
