Coronado SAFE Presents the Third Annual Parenting Conference

"Raising Children in an Age of Overwhelm" Topic to Challenge Parents

Over the last few years the Coronado Unified School District has formed a strong partnership with Coronado SAFE to strengthen our District's families and foster strong character amongst our youth. From the on-campus life-skills enrichment programs SAFE hosts at all CUSD sites, to the extension of off-campus no-cost counseling support services that SAFE coordinates through site administrators and school counselors, SAFE has become a valued partner in education to the benefit of all of our children.

Amongst the many contributions Coronado SAFE has provided to our students and our parents, perhaps the greatest comes in their unique department of Family Enrichment and Education. Aside from periodic workshops, seminars, and class series offered throughout the year, Coronado SAFE's Annual Parenting Conference has quickly become a mainstay of our community.

This year's parenting conference, "Raising Children in an Age of Overwhelm", seeks to solve the challenges that our modern group of parents face. Hectic lifestyles, increasing expectations, and often overwhelming stresses are a condition of contemporary culture with many parents now seeking to find peace within it all. "Raising Children in an Age of Overwhelm" features 6 consecutive speakers who each give a 20 minute presentation on how overwhelm comes into play with their own topic of their expertise.

Speakers this year include:

Partners in Education: Coronado Middle School and the Coronado Police Department's Team Up to Offer GREAT Program

T
he Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) middle school program for 6th grade students is part of the curriculum in the Life Skills elective wheel class.  The GREAT component consists of a competency-based life skills curriculum designed to produce knowledge and attitudinal and behavioral changes through the use of facilitative teaching, positive behavior rehearsal, cooperative and interactive learning techniques, and extended teacher activities. It is designed to provide students with the skills they need to avoid gang pressure and youth violence. A special feature of the program is the use of scenarios that address bullying behaviors.

Students are presented with a situation where they must make decisions about how they would respond. The activity focuses on empathy, taking personal responsibility, and knowing when to take action.

Another special feature of the curriculum is the GREAT Project, which requires students to present a plan for improving their school. Research indicates that gang members have lower levels of school commitment than non-gang members, as well as higher levels of social isolation. This assignment acknowledges these findings by helping students feel a stronger connection to their school.

Photos include GREAT class #1 and a photo of a GREAT student reaching out to homeless citizens in downtown San Diego offering them food as his GREAT community project!

CMS MOUSE Squad Makes a Difference for Student Learning

The CMS MOUSE Squad was very busy lately not only with CMS projects, but with District ones too!  They have been helping to install Chromeboxes which resulted in a very clean and neat look in CMS minilabs.

Other MOUSErs were taking the old CPUs down to the boiler room along with old unneeded cords and cables.  MOUSErs broke down all of the boxes and put them in the boiler room to be picked up for recycling.

Other MOUSErs are getting the new Chromebook cords set to the proper length and installing them in carts, and finally others were putting the Chromebooks into the carts.  During this time they also were placing "property of" stickers on the Chromebooks and labeling them with inventory numbers as well as item numbers.  This is quite a process, but the outcome is looking wonderful.

Coronado Schools Foundation in High Gear for the New Year

Over 300 runners participated in the NewMe 5K and Fun Run on January 10th at Tidelands Park with many volunteers. Thanks to a partnership with San Diego SoulMates, the nonprofit who organized the event, they selected CSF to share the net proceeds from the race, fulfilling a goal to benefit a local charity supporting children and education.  Coronado High NJROTC Color Guard, under CAPT Ken Ireland, opened the event with CHS Senior Tyler Gilmore singing the National Anthem.  CSF hopes to partner with this club again in 2016 and increase local participation.

The Monte Carlo Benefit Auction in November, chaired by Tori Heintzelman, netted a record $255,000 for our local public schools.  That's a 27% increase and wouldn't have been possible without the support of our 460 attendees, 200+ donors,  20 business partners and over 100 volunteers who worked on the event.  CSF Event Coordinator Abby Buckley and Director of Development Michelle Gilmore, both CUSD parents, were instrumental in the overall success of the event.  Our thanks to all who made this event a successful venture.

On to the 27th Annual Telethon on March 12th at Coronado High School! Just eight weeks away, our talented students at KCMS and CTV/CHS under the direction of Amy Steward and Tony Perri, are off and running planning the fourth student-produced event.  Mark your calendars for a great night with the live event at the Coronado High Performing Arts Center (5-8:30 pm) and the Quad filled with fun family activities and the Senior Class BBQ from 4-7 pm.  We look forward to welcoming the school and greater community to this fun, family event with something for everyone.  Featuring live student acts with site principals serving as hosts with students from each school site, this "shared-cause" community event will raise much needed funds for our local public schools.  To learn more about what your donations fund or make your donation today, please visit www.csfkids.org.  Stop by the office in the CUSD Office, 201 Sixth Street, or call us at 437-8059.
