CoSA Serves as a Model School for California Department of Education
CoSA Foundation Donates $215,000 to CUSD
Coronado School of the Arts Foundation made their annual donation in direct support of the Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) at a school board meeting recently. Since the Foundation's inception they have given approximately two million dollars to the Coronado Unified School District in support of CoSA.
CoSA is San Diego County's premier public school arts conservatory, home to 200 scholar artists in grades 9 through 12, who attend the nationally ranked Coronado High School or Coronado Pathways Charter School. CoSA provides an intense, pre-professional arts education to students from Coronado and from all over San Diego, who are admitted after a rigorous and competitive application/audition process. CoSA continues to serve as a model school and Demonstration Site for the California Department of Education's Specialized Secondary Program and for Career Technical Education programs.

Without the financial support of the Foundation CoSA would simply cease to exist. The main revenue stream for the Foundation is the generosity of CoSA families and the diligent volunteerism is invaluable. The CoSA Foundation Board of Directors is a 12-member, all-volunteer Board consisting of San Diego and Coronado community members, CoSA parents, and supporters who work tirelessly to help ensure the financial success of CoSA.
Because of budget cuts within the District the CoSA Foundation has been asked to donate $280,000 for the 2014-15 school year. This funding directly supports CoSA by paying for faculty. As CoSA moves into its 20th year they will continue to honor the commitment of two decades of hard working students, their families, and CoSA's accomplished Alumni and continue to innovate for the future.
CoSA helps our youth in so many ways from building confidence, problem solving, perseverance and focus, to accountability, creativity, receiving constructive feedback, and dedication. These are invaluable characteristics for our future leaders. CoSA is making a difference!
If you or someone you know is interested in donating, volunteering or helping in any way please contact the CoSA Foundation Director of Development at 619-522-6202 or Christina.curtin@coronadousd.net or go to their website at www.cosafoundation.org for more information.

"Maleficent: The Untold Story" Performed This Weekend
Journey with CoSA Classical and Contemporary Dance to an enchanted world of princesses, fairy godmothers and magic spells in the production of "Maleficent: The Untold Story." This variation of the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty is choreographed and performed by CoSA dancers under Artistic Director Betzi Roe.
This beautiful story is a delightful way to start the holiday season's festivities. See for yourself how true love comes in unexpected ways. Performances are at Coronado Performing Arts Center, 650 D Avenue, on Saturday, December 6th at 7:00 PM and Sunday, December 7th at 2:00 PM. Tickets are available online at cosasandiego.com, or at the door. Ticket prices range from $6.00 - $18.00, with discounts for seniors and military.
CoSA Dance Conservatory is comprised of a talented group of young artists who are focused on developing their creative artistry in choreography and dance. These dedicated students are immersed in their art, taking an additional three hours of daily instruction in dance.
Performed by this talented group, "Maleficent: The Untold Story" depicts a tale of betrayed friendship that disrupts the beauty and peace of an enchanted land. The crippled and embittered fairy Maleficent seeks revenge during the christening of King Stephan's first born. King Stephan is portrayed by the talented Lucas Aguilar, a student new this year to the Dance conservatory.
The fairies, delightfully danced by Marissa Canton, Heather Noonan, and Yekatrina Sudakova, are invited to the christening ceremony to bestow gifts on the newborn Aurora. The last fairy to bestow her gift to Aurora is interrupted by Maleficent, who furiously casts a spell on the infant Aurora. The young Aurora, danced by senior Dominique Chapman, portrays a beautiful, virtuous and graceful young lady, but upon her sixteenth birthday she will prick her finger on a spindle and fall into a deep slumber until awakened by her true love's kiss.
Like Aurora, Dominique is compassionate. In real life, she uses dance to help children with autism express themselves through movement. Dominique has discovered the power in dance, not just in the children she has helped, but also within herself.

Overgrown Garden Turned Into a Worm Farm at Silver Strand
Silver Strand's "Green Team," coordinated by the school's MFLC, is a newly formed group of 5th graders committed to making a difference with an environmental focus. Their first project was to work collaboratively with second grade teacher, Susan Larson, and her students over several weeks cleaning an overgrown area to make room for a worm farm! Materials and supplies were provided by the district's M& O Department, and the students helped design the farm's features and layout.
The farm is educating the 2nd grade class and the Green Team on the effectiveness of composting. The second graders have been taking excellent care of the worms. In two months, the students will be ready to harvest their first tray of vermicompost!
