Time Warner and the History Channel Sponsors the Event

Take A Veteran to School Day Highlights Celebration
of Our Local Heroes at All Schools

Last Friday Coronado Middle School and Village Elementary students, faculty and guests were treated to another once in a lifetime moment when the schools hosted, and Time Warner and the History Channel sponsored, Take A Veteran to School Day. This national program was developed to link veterans with students nationwide. Schools and communities across the nation invite veterans of all backgrounds to share their stories and receive appreciation for their service.

Take A Veteran to School Day is a special event for our school and community as we celebrate the brave men and women of our military who have served, or are currently serving, this great country of ours.  Students and guests were treated by our military heroes who shared their experiences in the classrooms with a culminating activity of the Navy SEAL team parachuting onto Neidermeyer Field.  An incredible experience was had by all.

Amy Steward, KCMS teacher, spearheaded this fantastic learning experience as she has done for many years. Special thanks go to our friends at Time Warner Cable and the History Channel and especially to all of our wonderful parent and community volunteers, including the faculty, staff, and students at CMS.

Veteran's Day Event at Silver Strand Honors Former and Current Military Heroes

This year's annual "Silver Strand Honors Its Military Heroes" event took place in conjunction with weekly Flagpole Assembly on Friday, November 7th.  The assembly began with a tribute for veterans and the school's many military families by special guest, Steven Alt, Command Master Chief at Naval Base Coronado.  Former and current School Liaison Officers were introduced as special guests.  The school's MFLC next explained several projects she had been working on with students and military parents in connection with the event.  These included inspiring banners signed by grade level groups of students to be distributed to various area commands and a large "ideal" military base designed and built by members of the Military Kids Club and other interested students.

After the assembly, military families were invited into Strand Hall to see these displays, be served breakfast snacks, and have their photographs taken to be placed as a border around the interactive deployment whiteboard in the Connections Room.  Many families and veterans were in attendance, and a memorable time was had by all!

Coaching Career Spanned 20 years in Two States

Principal Bill Cass Honored by San Diego Hall of Champions
as San Diego County Coaching Legend

This past Wednesday night was a very special one for CUSD's own Principal Bill Cass. Colleagues, fellow coaches, and friends attended Bill's induction as a San Diego County High School Coaching Legend in the area of varsity girls' basketball, awarded by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

For over 50 years, the San Diego Hall of Champions has dedicated itself to the ideals and goals of high school athletics. In 1999, the Board of Trustees approved a proposal by the Hall's Legends Selection Committee to honor retired high school coaches of San Diego County whose records and standing in the coaching community were exemplary. Coaches who are inducted have dedicated a minimum of 10 years of service as a varsity head coach and demonstrated outstanding performance and sportsmanship both on and off the field of play.

Mr. Cass' girls' high school coaching career spanned twenty years in two states. He spent his first five years in Alaska where he guided the smallest school in the state to field a girls' team (19 girls enrolled) to a top 5 all-schools state ranking. He spent the rest of his coaching career at Coronado High School where his teams won numerous league titles and earned a CIF championship vs. Lincoln in 1996. Over the years, Bill was voted Division IV "Coach of the Year" on several occasions, and he was selected by his peers to coach the county all-star game in his last year of coaching.

When Bill retired from coaching in 1998, he was fourth among girls' basketball coaches in career wins. Mr. Cass has "coached" students, parents, and fellow educators off the field of play as a much-admired, exemplary teacher and administrator.  There will be a permanent display at the San Diego Hall of Champions honoring Mr. Cass and eleven other San Diego county coaches who received this prestigious award. CUSD is indeed proud of Coach Cass!

Keep these tips in mind for how to be involved parents in a child's learning

Ideas for Better Communication Between Parents and Teachers:

Be Honest About Strengths and Weaknesses

By Asha Dornfest (@parenthacks) of Parent Hacks

My best advice about positive teacher-parent collaboration comes in two parts: First, I recommend setting the ground rules for open communication the first week of school. Given every teacher's time constraints, it's impossible to hit the perfect level of communication that satisfies every parent in the class, but if you are able to set tone and frequency expectations right at the beginning of the year-whether with a weekly email, "office hours," or a printed newsletter-parents will know where to begin. Second, be honest and provide specific feedback to parents about a child's strengths and weaknesses. I hear from parents all the time who love their child's teacher, but wish he or she would be more up front about not only the good stuff, but also the problem areas. Parents know that teachers see a different side of their children, and they very much want a balanced view. Don't be afraid to be honest about a child's weaknesses, and be ready to offer practical advice about how parents can help their children succeed.
