October is the National Month to Recognize Values-Based Education
CUSD Celebrates National Character Counts & Red Ribbon Week
For seven years Coronado's public schools and the City of Coronado have continued to support educating students that showing great character and making healthy lifestyle choices is a valuable asset to retain for the rest of their lives. The district and city join schools and communities across the nation in recognizing both Red Ribbon and Character Counts during the week of October 27-31. For more information on these recognized weeks please visit: http://redribbon.org/ or http://charactercounts.org/programs/ccweek/ . Here is a look at how each school is celebrating this important month:
"What I Want To Be When I Grow Up Day" at SES
Silver Strand Elementary teachers offered a number of activities and lessons in classrooms which focused on the Six Pillars of Character." This month's featured pillar of character is Trustworthiness. The week is kicked off with the school's annual "What I Want To Be When I Grow Up Day." Presenters representing a large cross section of professions talk to students about the importance of good character and study habits in attaining their careers. Professions represented in this year's event included police, military, nursing, flight attendant, aerospace engineer, writer/historian, human resources, physicist, and ex-professional football player/coach. With the overlap of Red Ribbon Week , high school students from teacher Becky Black's "Friday Night Live" club will also be making presentations in classrooms to their younger peers on the importance of making healthy lifestyle decisions.

Students of Character Recognized at VES
Village Elementary School will be holding an all school assembly that promotes the Six Pillars of Character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship). Select students who have gone above and beyond in the area of Character will be recognized at this assembly in front of peers and family members. Classroom teachers, Specials Teachers, Instructional Assistants, and school staff will incorporate the importance of character development into academic lessons. Students from the CHS Friday Night Club will be on campus to deliver a message that promotes healthy lifestyles and good character. Throughout the month families have the opportunity to join their child for lunch. Finally, as part of Village Elementary School's restorative discipline plan, Character Counts tickets will continue to be distributed to students exhibiting good character.
CMS Stands United Against Bullying and Drugs
CMS students and staff are participating in various activities and lessons each day of the week, emphasizing the significance of positive decisions and healthy choices by "Standing Up Against Bullying and Drugs." Some of the valuable lessons and reminders being demonstrated at school during this time include:
- Daily KCMS news broadcast videos and interviews on positive choices
- Students and staff signing the "anti-bullying" pledge banner at lunch
- Distribution of "United We Stand" pencils and bookmarks
- All school assembly performed by CMS students on the realities of middle school experiences and how to "Stand Up Against Bullying and Drugs"
- Student and Staff discussions and curriculum lessons focused on healthy decision making
- Wear Red Day / Show Your School Pride Day
CMS regularly promotes and reminds students that acts of great character and making appropriate choices are an everyday effort. The school specifically recognizes this week as a way to support our nation's effort to bring attention to the importance of developing children of healthy citizenship and character.
ASB Officers Take Huge Leadership Role at CHS
Coronado High School's ASB has launched a new theme for the year and beyond around the acronym TRIBE (Teamwork, Respect, Integrity, Bonding, and Excellence), which has become an anchor for a homegrown character education program. The CHS ASB officers hosted a non-traditional first day of school with lessons in each period based on the themes developed by the ASB. The students continue to emphasize these values in activities and recognitions, including honoring students, teachers, and classified staff members of the month for their contributions to campus. This week is Homecoming Week, with "Bonding" as the prevailing theme. Activities include uniting students with fun dress days, spirited class competitions, and exciting celebrations of spirit and unity.
