Events Commemorate Patriot Day
Students and Staff Recognize Anniversary of 9/11 Tragedy
Coronado schools paused yesterday to remember the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. At Coronado High School, NJROTC students placed over 3000 American flags in the lawn on the quad area. Promptly at 9:40, students and staff stood all around the flags as a student played Taps on his trumpet. The message was meant to urge everyone not to forget how our lives were changed because of the attacks.
"It was a beautiful ceremony," said Steve Abbott, CHS Assistant Principal. "I wish everyone in Coronado could be here to share in the pride for our country that I see expressed here today. I have no doubt that our students know the significance of the day."
"Students in our schools were just infants or small children when those attacks occurred," said Ken Ireland, NJROTC teacher. "They, much like some feel about the attacks on Pearl Harbor or the assassination of President Kennedy, have come to understand the significance of that moment in time. We must be sure that they never forget."

Village Elementary kindergartners showed their love for America in a special classroom presentation at the ECDC. Teacher Nancy Ratcliffe and her "Radical Rabbits" sang and gave American Sign Language movements to a variety of patriotic songs. Students wore red, white, and blue patriotic logos on their white shirts and ended the ceremony with a march around the classroom. About 25 parents joined in the celebration.

School Staff and Students Get Wet for a Good Cause
|
Students at Coronado Middle School recently enjoyed watching Assistant Principal Karin Mellina be doused with cold water by Principal Jay Marquand for an event to benefit ALS victims.
Some of the CUSD administrators and board members also took the challenge. Islander football players prepared the ice buckets and cheerleaders led the crowd as the cold water poured down on willing participants. You can see the video of this event at http://coronadotv.me/ .
The "Ice Bucket Challenge" involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water on video, posting that video to social media, then nominating others to do the same, all in an effort to raise ALS awareness. People can either accept the challenge or make a donation to an ALS Charity of their choice, or do both.
The ALS Association is the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to fighting on all fronts. The ALS Association's mission includes providing care services to assist people with ALS and their families through a network of chapters working in communities across the nation and a global research program focused on the discovery of treatments and a cure for the disease. In addition, The Association's public policy efforts empower people to advance public policies in our nation's Capital that respond to the needs of people with ALS. It is through this integrated three-prong approach that we are able to support people living with the disease, provide them with vital benefits and ultimately find a treatment and cure.

Donate Now to Bridge the Ever-Widening Financial Gap |
In light of the significant funding challenges our school district is now facing, Coronado Schools Foundation (CSF) is stepping up to accept the challenge. Many concerned parents have flooded us with calls asking how they can help.
Although CSF has already provided our schools with their fiscal-year end program amounts, additional funds will definitely provide much needed financial support. Principals have planned for the next school year and have made heart-wrenching decisions due to the current budget shortfall and the rejection by voters of Proposition E. There is now no doubt the current funding crisis will have a more devastating impact on school programs our children have come to depend on.
As the details of these cuts emerge, one thing is certain- we will ALL need to rise up collectively to financially support our schools. Your donations today will help fund the experiences and opportunities CUSD students and families desperately need and have come to expect. CSF will continue to request your participation in support of our schools as planning for the uncertain future continues in our district.
Please help us Bridge the Gap and donate generously today at www.csfkids.org. You can also mail your check (made payable to CSF) to 201 Sixth Street, Coronado, CA 92118 or call 619-437-8059, extension 1 or 3. Donations of stocks and bonds are also welcome and can be accepted through our Vanguard Account. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law (Tax ID #94-2745484).
