How was your Thanksgiving?  Did you participate in Black Friday?  Cyber Monday?  Are you preparing for a December celebration?  I find it interesting that we give thanks and then the very next day we start thinking about shopping to give and get STUFF.  The days after Thanksgiving, I continued to ask my kids what they were "grateful" for. They kept trying to remind me that Thanksgiving had passed. Somehow my usual question about gratitude was attached to a holiday as opposed to an everyday habit that we try to practice. While I will not give them coal to teach them to be grateful for what they already have, we will be incorporating some gratitude activities through our holidays. As an ADHD mom with an ADHD child the excitement of the holidays is something I have always loved.  We will be going downtown in Portland tonight to see the incredible and colorful light installations. The excitement of this visual celebration is one of my favorite things this time of year.  How do you "celebrate" this season?

As always, Attention Talk Radio will continue to give insight, information, and new ways to think about topics related to ADHD and attention. Happy Holidays!

Attention Deficit Disorder: Meet the Neurotransmitters
Attention Deficit Disorder: Meet the Neurotransmitters

ADHD coach and ADDiva Linda Roggli ( http://www.addiva.net) always struggled to keep the key neurotransmitters that impact ADHD straight until she wrote her book, "Confessions of an ADDiva." In the book Linda put a name and face to serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in such a way that made it easy to remember them, what they do, and how they impact those with ADHD. Watch our video interview with Linda where she introduces us to her neurotransmitter friends.

9 Magic Dots

Many people who know the following puzzle think it has only one answer. If you agree, prepare for a surprise. If you have seen it before, solve it anyway; then shift the paradigm and generate another quite different solution.

The problem: Draw four connecting straight lines that will touch all nine dots only once without lifting your pen or pencil from the paper.

If you have done it before, find a totally different solution. Spend at least five minutes before reading further...

You can connect these nine dots with four straight lines by moving outside the boundaries as shown here:

If you did not solve the problem, what do you see when you look at the nine dots?

If you see a square, or two triangles, or some geometric figure, then you probably blocked yourself by assuming boundaries that do not exist and staying within mind funnels that kept you inside the lines.

We often assume boundaries that may not exist. We stay within the lines. We think within the rules. We use unstated, phantom criteria. We don't shift paradigms without permission.

In fact, you can find dozens of completely different answers to this problem; the one above constitutes a quick fix, the first adequate answer! How can we shift the paradigm and find the others?

In our next Newsletter, we will have a follow-up to this challenge.
