Brrrrrrr.... it's cold where I am. The ADDers in Maine are hunkering down; the squirrels are gathering nuts for the winter; and we are working hard to get back into the routine of school again. Dr. Patricia Quinn talked about managing an ADHD household and touched on this subject, and Leslie Josel will be sharing some spectacular tips for managing time this month.  I am grateful to have access to such spectacular guests who are willing to bestow their knowledge on Attention Talk Radio so we don't have to "wing it" all the time.

In this episode, co-hosts Jeff Copper and Kirsten Milliken interview returning guest Dr. Patricia Quinn on running the business of an ADHD family! The family chief financial officer pays the bills.  The chief marketing officer markets such things as getting kids in preferred schools or as the starting second baseman. Then there is the chief operations officer in charge of making sure all family members are dressed on time and ready to go. This includes the jobs of cook, chauffeur, homework officer, vacation planner, holiday social director, family counselor, and part-time medical director. It's enough for any house, but add a few ADD-ers to the mix and WOW!  Listen in as the three of them lay the issues on the table, discuss key factors, and offer helpful tips for the CFO, CMO, and COO of your home.

The annual conference is an opportunity for ADDers, their families, friends, and providers to get together and learn from the experts. In the interview, the trio will discuss the tools Leslie uses to help those with ADHD to experience time so that they could get a better feel for it. Listen in as they talk about the tactical tools Leslie uses on a daily basis to help those with ADHD. Dr. David Nowell is someone I have been paying attention to since I met him at this year's ACO conference.  This guy knows his stuff!  When it comes to naming his videos, well, he's a bit off.  This is David's video named, "David Nowell 5-Minute Overview." It's only two minutes and two seconds long!  What is perfect about it is his explanation of the importance of learning what matters most to us. And it's the perfect amount of time to keep my attention!!!

Take Advantage of Natural Breaks in Your Daily Routine

You might have heard my conversation with Kirsten and Jeff on Attention Talk Radio back in July (where did the summer go?) in which we considered the practice of "Asking 2 Questions." I suggested in that conversation that effective goal- and time-managers are asking themselves two questions continuously over the course of the day.  With each activity and commitment he/she is asking, "Am I having fun right now?" and "Is this important?"  Another way to Ask 2 Questions is this:  "Am I engaged and effective right now?"  and "Is this why I'm here on the planet? Is this activity purposeful and related to my most important goals?" 



Because it's important -- vital -- that our activities are engaging us and pulling us forward and eliciting the best from us (thus, the first question).  And it's not enough just to be having fun -- the world is counting on us to do what we're here to do and to be!  (And that's the second question.)


So here's a strategy to begin the practice of Asking 2 Questions: Take advantage of natural breaks in your daily routine to pause. And reflect. To check in at a deep level and ask whether you're engaged and impassioned and, at the same time, to ask yourself whether you're really and truly on task. Doing what matters most right now.Some examples of natural breaks in our routine might include:

  • Staring off into space for a few minutes waiting for the coffee to brew
  • Standing by the photocopier during a big job while the machine hums, "Whuzzh, whuzzh, whuzzh."
  • And -- this one's my favorite -- when nature calls. You absolutely positively will stop several times over the course of your day to use the bathroom. Don't use that time to distract yourself with Facebook (that's gross by the way). When are you closer to your physical body than in a private, naked (almost) moment like that?

So check in with your body at moments like that and gently ask, "How am I doing?" Just notice whether you feel forward movement and lightness (that's dopamine!). And check in with your head, too.  Notice whether you're on task. "Have I done the one most important thing today that will make the biggest advance towards my most important goal? Am I on target?"  


And then get back to your routine until another natural break presents itself. And another.

brainDuring a visit to a mental asylum, a visitor asked the director what the criteria is that defines if a patient should be institutionalized.

"Well," said the director, "we fill up a bathtub. Then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup, and a bucket to the patient and ask the patient to empty the bathtub."

Okay, here's your test:  

  1. Would you use the spoon?
  2. Would you use the teacup?
  3. Would you use the bucket?

"Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would choose the bucket, as it is larger than the spoon."

What was the director's response?
