Credit Union Journal asked the state leagues what their top priorities will be when their member credit unions descend on Capitol Hill to lobby their lawmakers during CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference this week. Indiana's response is on Slide #13 of 31.

Credit unions continue to offer free checking accounts to their members at a high rate, while more and more banks continue to charge for them. Nearly three-quarters of credit unions (72%) offer free checking, compared with only 38% of the largest banks in the United States, according to a recent report from Bankrate.com.
CUNA wants to work with the Congress to remove regulatory barriers. If these barriers are removed, the impact that credit unions have on the financial lives of their members will be that much more significant and the economic contribution credit unions and their members make will be that much greater.
Between 2013 and 2014, nearly 2 million Millennials became members of credit unions, a 2% increase, said the Credit Union National Association, a Washington, D.C. trade group. Gen X-ers are also switching: 1.9 million opened accounts in the same period, and now 28% of credit union account holders are Millennials and 26% are Gen X-ers.
