Jim Nussle says he believes credit unions can work with small banks to create momentum and put pressure on both legislators and regulators to reduce unnecessary and cumbersome regulations. This could be a surprise for us to deliver to Congress. We can create a shared agenda and build momentum in a bipartisan way to help reduce the regulatory burden that small banks and credit unions face.

Spending more money than ever before in any election cycle in its history in support of the election of credit union supporters to Congress, and sending millions of mail pieces directly to credit union members, CUNA has joined an elite group of financial sector campaign contributors during the 2014 midterm elections.

Jim Nussle has been named one of the top association lobbyists in Washington. The publication noted that in taking the reins at CUNA, he'll continue to fight against banks to save the credit unions tax exemption.

CUNA's Mary Dunn weighed in on a rule that would require banks to retain at least 5% of the risk on their books when securitizing loans: "CUNA has advocated strongly for the important step of aligning the Qualified Residential Mortgage with the existing Qualified Mortgage definition. Doing so encourages lenders to work with creditworthy borrowers to make home loans that will continue to drive the country and our economy forward."
