POLITICO - by Tal Kopan  10/6/2014
CUNA launched a new website and campaign called "Stop the Data Breaches," which is aimed to mobilize members and urge Congress to pass legislation. "When a data breach occurs, the merchants pay NONE of the costs to send individuals their new cards or the fraudulent charges an individual may have on their cards or accounts," the website warns. "In fact, the merchants are not required to pay ANY costs incurred from their own data breaches. Who does pay all the costs from these breaches? Your credit union - and ultimately, credit union members like you."
CUNA's president and CEO Jim Nussle says he's still learning a great deal about credit unions, "But this I know: I've landed at CUNA and, under my watch, the credit union tax exemption will be strongly and completely defended. It's time for bankers to turn off the landing lights, and move on." (story is toward the bottom of the page in this news round-up).
The Wall Street Journal - by Ben Leubsdorf  9/29/2014
Some Americans have stepped up their borrowing in recent months to fuel consumption. Outstanding consumer credit, excluding mortgages, rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 9.7% in July, according to Federal Reserve data. With terms easy and interest rates low, "it's easier and cheaper for people to finance purchases with debt now than it was before," said Bill Hampel, chief economist for the Credit Union National Association.
USA Today - by Alice Holbrook  9/27/2014
Mike Schenk, senior economist with the Credit Union National Association, says that "the downturn pushed a lot of people who weren't subprime into that category. If you sat down with a lot of these people now, you'd find that they're back on track.".
Bankrate - by Donna Fuscaldo
Keep in mind that if you go with a credit union or a bank with a smaller network of ATMs, they often partner with other banking institutions to give their customers a wide range of ATMs free of charge, says Susan Tiffany, director of personal finance publications for adults for the Washington, D.C.-based Credit Union National Association. "Through the 12 months ending December 2013, credit union members paid lower fees to the tune of $1.1 billion," Tiffany says. "A byproduct of a credit union's cooperative nature is that it shares services, including ATMs."
