CUNA's Bill Hampel says that 100 million memberships reflects the growing customer satisfaction and trust in credit unions. He said, "Clearly, there is growing recognition for credit unions among consumers. They increasingly understand that a credit union places their interests above all else, particularly in returning financial benefits to consumer members in the forms of lower rates on loans, higher returns on savings, and lower and fewer fees."

Mike Schenk, CUNA's interim chief economist, said that credit unions are in a better place today than they were four to six years ago and have come through the economic downturn in better shape than the banking industry - one reason why credit unions now have 100 million memberships.

A growing number of Americans are disillusioned with their banks, which have been regularly increasing their consumer fees, prompting people to make the switch to credit unions and reap the benefits of the smaller and often more personal banking experience. In June, credit unions surpassed 100 million memberships nationwide, an increase of more than 16 percent from 10 years ago.
